Can't capture to external hard drive!?

I'm using Final Cut Express and I want to capture my footage directly to my external hard drive, I already have a capture folder on the drive but when i start to capture It just says "Allocating Disk Space" for forever and I can't get out of it and NOTHING is captured. When I capture to the internal hard drive, it works great. What am I doing wrong?

It depends on your system specs and the external hard drive speed- not all have the throughput to keep up with capture. A firewire 800 7200rpm drive is no problem. A firewire 400 7200 RPM drive could be a problem. USB External drive- could be a big problem.

Ya know... I've had this issue for awhile now too. I would like to capture directly to my external (WD 7200 - firewire 800), but when I tried a few months back, it crashed FCP and caused all sorts of strange problems...

I didn't even try a fix, I just stopped doing it. Any idea what the problem could be??

thanks Noah (I was hoping to hear from you). I have the firewire 400 @ 7200, I'll try an upgrade. Thanks again.

What Mac are you on, what version of FCP? Are you absolutly sure you have the correct drive set as your scratch disk?

Depends on the system specs- a Desktop Mac Pro should have no trouble. An Imac for example could depending on what else is attached, RAM, etc.

I'm on a powermac G5 - Dual 2.0, 1.5gb RAM... it really shouldn't be a problem. Maybe I'll give it another try.

When I first started using FC last year I very stupidly used my primary drive (working on a G4 lap top) as the scratch disk. Not long after it gave up on me... Since the Hard drive has been replaced I now use a Lacie LittleBig disk. It's 200GB, firewire 800 and runs 7200rpm. I bought with those specs after taking advice. It runs and captures flawlessly. To anyone looking for an external and who can afford it I would advise trying to stay close to firewire 800 and 7200rpm ...or above!
I've never tried capturing on to a USB drive, but I wouldn't fancy my chances.
