I just got ProTools, been learning the program since the end of January. I used to play bass in a band, but this is my first time playing all the instruments and mixing everything together, which is a whole different world from just playing my bass. :violin:

Anyways, here's a couple of tunes I'm working on. My stuff is sort of like hip hop in the drums, weird basslines, heavy guitars and then I put in synths. I'd like to say Lil Jon goes metal, but no lyrics yet.

Let's see some of you other guys.

Mate, Alright is excellent! really good stuff. Is that main riff based on the same timing as the Halloween theme? (5/4 i think).

The main guitar riff in Summer Days gets repetitive, mayber drop it in some spots.

Do you know of any good programs beside pro tools for recording heavy (pantera, metallica) guitar? I only have Guitar Pro 3, record clean into my laptop then use amplitube on it. It sounds alright, but I get a drop-out about every 2 seconds (in exact increments) if I up the distortion.

Are you doing anything for SPYFEST? If not I think Alright might fit well with a short I'm doing. It's called 'In the Machine', will have some karate in it. Shot on HVX + Brevis35 mm adaptor. Sorry for the rant.

Right on dude, glad you liked it. Summer Days i came up with last week but i don't have anything other than what's marked down - normally I do a bridge of some kind but haven't gotten that far yet.

I don't know about any fixes for recording heavy - i do some heavy stuff in protools, but i get dropouts if i'm running too many other programs. are you quitting out of everything else?

You're free to use Alright if you'd like, I'm definitely interested in scoring music for more pieces and I think that one's perfect, since it's got a good drive but doesn't demand too much attention

No not running anything else, might be just a problem with the amplitude plug - will try to get something else. The drop outs sound like a half second of white noise.

Forgot to mention, you're recordings sound nice and clean too. In a few days I'll post some of my guitar riffs, see what you think. I have access to Cubase SX 3 so I should get into that.

Yeah I'm pretty keen on 'Alright', just listened to it again, man it's good. It's a flexible track, for instance the wah would be great to fade out to. I'll have to find a music release for you. Will pm you when I get it.

Keep up the good work.

Hey man, sounds pretty good. I've been a musician for about 25 years now. Don't have anything I've written (well, a few electronic tracks that need to be rescored with a decent sequencer) but would love to.

What version of ProTools are you using? And what gear?

My gear's not very good - I'm using a guitar I borrowed from a friend, then I have two basses, a stingray and an acoustic fretless. I'm using ProTools 7, reason adapted 2.5 (i want to upgrade to 3 when I get some money) and everything else, drums, synths, flutes, piano etc are all programmed through reason.

tmnt, what program are you using to catch the sound files amplitube is making? I'm using amplitube as well, but it's a plugin in ProTools. I don't run anything else when I'm in that program, but mostly cos I can't, the whole machine grinds to a halt.

I used to use Nuendo (i think it turned into Cubase, or Cubase turned into Nuendo, i forget which) but switched to protools when I Bought an M-box.

BTW if you'd like a version of the song with the wah fading out, I'll go ahead and make one.

Here are some others - this one came out of nowhere, some night I stayed up all night working on some latin beat that isn't anything like anything I've done before: http://www.jlboyce.com/music/Interlude-20070310.mp3

In this one I used Amplitube to give the guitars a crunch, and I ran the bass through it during the chorus to get that real thick, crunchy tone: http://www.jlboyce.com/music/I_Feel_Ya-20070310.mp3

I'm using Amplitude in the Guitar Pro 3 program. I'm just running my guitar straight into my computer with a step-down jack. GP3 Works pretty good for just getting the riffs down. I haven't played with it for a while but might get a new version of amplitude and see if that stops the drop-outs.

mrWrOng, how much ram do you have? Upgrading ram's usually the best way to get a lot better performance and not really expensive. I just put an extra 512mb in mine so up to 2GB now and it is much better. I notice a big diff with After Effects in particular now. There's an app I use called memory pro 5.6 (think that's it) it's good cause it sits down in the windows toolbar next to the time and has a percentage of how much free memory you currently have. Good for when you're rendering to know if you're going to be ok or not.

Actually I like the wah how it is but if I end up needing it longer I'll let you know. Thanks.

Will listen to those new tracks tomorrow and get back to you.

what are you using for a preamp? For example, my guitar goes into my M-box and then into protools. the m-box has a usb powered pre-amp that's actually pretty decent - not great, but decent.

If you're going straight into a line-in jack or something, that's gonna give you some tone issues. I don't know if that would cause the dropouts, though.

I'm running a gig and a half in my powerbook, I'm gonna put in another gig at some point and max it out, but i think i'm just getting to the limits of what this guy can do. 1.5ghz just ain't that much for ProTools, they write the latest edtions to be used on Mac Pros and quadcore G5s. That's just more juice than my little guy can muster.

For guitar, I'm running a Pod Pro, tube driver, and BBE sonic maximizer. I can go directly from that into a PA or a mixing board or a stereo. The Pod Pro is sweet!

I need to look into getting something similar to ProTools (I'm on a PC). I've got a Korg X3 workstation, and Oberheim sound module (old scool), a Roland drum module (can't think of the name of it, but it's the dance one and it sounds pretty sweet). I'd love to pick up a nice 88 key keyboard controller with weighted action.

I've been playing guitar for about 17 or 18 years. What about you guys?

tommy - nice setup! I've got an M-Audio oxygen 8, it's a mini keyboard, 22 keys, MIDI only, but it's really great for what I do. With my m-box and m-audio (both USB powered), I can take my powerbook & equipment out anywhere, even a forest or on the beach, sit down and start composing music.

Course, you always want the studio setup when you get home for the sweet sounds.

Terry - very southpark - i laughed, my girlfriend came over to ask me what the hell i was listening to. Good sounds, too, very clean

My grindcore/death metal band, after being on hiatus for about four years, recently got back together and we did an anti-Valentine's Day song that we released on Valentine's Day. Though it should be noted that our drummer declined to participate and we ended up using a drum machine.

Billy, that's intense man... sounds cool

mrWrOng - It's cool to jam with. I've got a Behringer 8 track mixer so I run the computer's soundcard out into that and the guitar rig into another track. I've got a bunch of backing tracks that I've downloaded from the net, like blues tracks, whatever. What I'll usually wind up doing is playing those in a loop (I've got about 10) and just jam on guitar for a few hours.

Oh yeah, I've got one of those mini keyboard controllers. It's this thing:

I need to pick up a midi interface one of these days...

I have an ESP M-350, EMG humbuckers. I've had it for years and it's an awesome guitar, great for metal (and most else). I also have a crap 3/4 (didn't realize size) guitar I got off ebay and have used twice. I have a gibson epiphone cutaway acoustic, it was only about AU $500 but it's a great guitar for the price. Used to have a 100wtt marshall amp (brilliant distortion but have to have it up a bit to get it, and up a bit is LOUD). Now have a 30wtt fender, don't know the model but it's good for at home.

Looking forward to listening to all these songs, I'm now inspired to figure out Cubase and put some drums to my guitar.

ESP makes a great guitar. George Lynch and Kirk Hammet both endorse them as well as a bunch of other guitarists. I've got a Jackson Reverse Dinky.

My first guitar was a Jackson PS-1 (I think). It was a pretty solid guitar for the price.
