79th Acadamy Awards is a pile of crap

1. the category is best foreign language film.
Which brings up the question, how much English does it take to keep a movie out of the foreign language category? I'm thinking of Babel, specifically.

Point well taken, but is that the 'intent' of the category - that overseas films compete with domestically made films (like Clint's film or Mel Gibson's APOCOLYPTO - which was also a foreign language film, as was PASSION OF THE CHRIST)? I just feel that PAN'S LABTRINTH got thrown up against a ringer in that category. I wouldn't be surprised if the rules might even change next time around. Michael Moore removed his film (FARENHEIT 9/11) from Oscar consideration in the Best Documentary category, explaining that he wanted to give other filmmakers a better chance at winning the prize. Is Clint listening?

i am actually not to angry with the oscars this year. the oscars have always been extremely slanted. And there has always been a "we owe her/him attitude in it"
For example how could any ron howard movie win anything, lol

i call this the "owe you ocsar"

they owed
scorsese
forest wit
alan arkin

and pan labrinth won alot so i dont feel so bad.
the departed wasnt the worse just bad compared to scorsese
babel was not very good but well shot. i feel bad for Children of men

I agree that the departed was good, but not best picture good. I thought the editing was terrible in the movie tho, not sure why it won that. Like that one scene with the pinhole view and then it panned out or whatever like a 1920's film....what was the point of that?

I agree with PST. And what's up with Allen Arkin winning best supporting actor?!!? I mean, WTF! Little Ms. Sunshine was a crap movie, and Arkin had maybe 10 minutes of screen time in the whole crappy movie! His performance wasn't brilliant, or challenging, or original. Another "we owe you" oscar fo' shizzle, bizzle. A f**king joke.

I think everyone on this thread, noob or not, needs to re-read (or for some read for the first time)

THIS THREAD:http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=70317

lately i've been seeing alot of f**k's and sh*t's and b*tch's and all sorts of nasty things, and that's not what we're about.

not to mention the title of this thread saying something is a piece of crap... there are many more creative words that are more flattering to your intelligence than these.

I thought about the title of my thread and I figured that the content would compensate for the bad title.
I also respect the rules and all that jazz but forums that don't moderate things so much are more fun. That's just my opinion.

Anyways, I also think that Crash is an over-rated movie. The acting was very bad. The dialogue was horrible. They might as well have had a narrator telling us the story. I hate it when movies have dialogue that explains everything to you. The whole point of a movie is to have your imagination going and tomake you think.

And once again, Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth got the short end of the stick.

I complete disagree with those saying The Departed was a makeup award. It is the best thing Scorsese has done in years and absolutely outshone everything it was up against this year. Granted, there were some fine movies as well as some pretenders, but I was completely satified with the choice of The Departed for the best picture of the year. I just watched Infernal Affairs and it made me appreciate The Departed even more.

Are you saying this because you liked Babel and they were the same movie?

Don Cheadle? Don Cheadle's acting was bad?

I don't think you can say it was very bad.

Plus, aren't we talking about the 79th, not the 77th?

On a forum where you have to do ****th*s*** to get a swear word on your screen, it's kind of obvious that this isn't like that.

Don Cheadle was definitely Oscar worthy in Hotel Rwanda.

Now that was an incredible movie.

Someone mentioned Crash being over-rated and I just added a little more to it.

I'm aware. And what I said was that it is more fun when a moderator doesn't worry so much about censorship. You get some really fun arguments and can let off steam in any way you want.

Cool. I'm gonna drop the subject now.

What was what you most disliked about Crash, try to be specific as possible.

I'll chime in. Crash is a horrible movie. Low brow, obvious, predictable, silly, gimmicky structure/plot, full of stereotypes and convenient plot points AND over-the-top preachy. It's one of those embarrassingly dated films. It was dated within days of its release and marks one of the lowest points in Academy Award history. Future generations will be baffled when they're reminded that it won best picture. The writing was ameteurish, acting mediocre (except for the guy who played the "cholo".) I don't want to start a social/political debate here, but one of the things that bugged me about Crash was the lack of any redeemable black characters. They were all dispicable. The white characters were pretty bad too. And let's not even get into the blatant racist portrayal of the asian characters. I think the asians had it worse. These were comic book characters, flat, stereotypes. And how the hell do you make a movie about LA's ethnic tensions concerning blacks, whites, middle eastern people, Mexicans, and asians and NOT EVEN MENTION THE JEWS! Come on! Where was the Jew stereotype? Where was the Jew's role in this film?! The ending sucked too.

Okay, now what was it that you DIDN'T like about the movie...

Has a best picture ever had a worse ending? What was Scorsese thinking? It wasn't bad enough that the word "rat" was used 37 times through the film? I did like the film overall, esp the build and I dug Leo's performance.

Has there ever a best picture as contrived as Crash? Paint by numbers racism. Too many characters and threads to give the subject of racism anything more than superficial treatment. And that leads to stereotypes.

I just think that Crash got slapped together in a month. Sure, Babel used the mutiple events cliche, but it made sense. It all linked to miscommunication and put things in a different perspective. They were also more subtle in showing the same issue with each character. It was more creative. And it did a good job of showing everyone's different culture and how everyone is human.

CRASH on the other hand just had several characters show a stereotype. They all were, SOMEHOW, facing some type of racism and felt a great need to talk about it. That's just plain dumb. And that is why I said that they might as well have had a narrator saying " And this is how the black man has a rough life. Oh, and this is what people think about mexicans. Oh yes and my fellow Middle Eastern people over here are always stingy, but not really." I mean come on, it was stupid how they put everything together.

The Departed has so many flaws that it is hard to know where to begin.

A major issue for me was the development of the relationship between Damon's character and the shrink. Not to mention that Damon's character is painted with the broad "villian" brush with the subtlety of a jackhammer, there is no way in hell that a shrink who deals with cops all day long would fall for somebody who has so many personality red flags. She is the one character who has a profession that would recognize and see through him in one conversation.

I mentioned this in another thread but I think it deserves repeating. These actors had ZERO rehearsal time together. I think this explains a ton. This movie is one monologue after another. With the exception of Dicaprio who was very solid.

I feel like the last good Scorcese film was Bringing out the Dead(although I love Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York). I also enjoyed the Bob Dylan doc and My Voyage to Italy.

If you really want to see a film that balances its celebrity cast with a defter touch, then go watch Zodiac. Maybe next film, Scorcese won't try to cram every A list celebrity that he can into his project.

As for the Crash/Babel debate. I think many of you who didn't like either film missed the subtleties in both.
