best way to preserve colors in DVD

I've just finished my second short with the DVX100. Its main characteristic is the color usage: colors are very strong and saturated, as you could see here (there are 3 grabs):

My problem is that with the DVD conversion I lose all the saturation: colors appears more desaturated than they are! I have no problems with .divx format, but when I try to put the movie on DVD (trhough FCP and/or Compressor) it appears desaturated.

How could I preserve colors? there are particular settings in Compressor or in DVD Studio Pro?

Thank you all!

Basically when you enter the world of mpeg2 in NTSC format its like entering hell: "Abandon hope all ye who enter here"

Forget about any sort of fidelity to anything. You image is only a thing to be roughly interpreted by its new container... its not yours anymore.
Forget it and concentrate on a good sund mix.

:zombie_smiley: really? even if I'm in PAL system? I suppose yes :crybaby:

anyway, just yesterday I saw the original (1953) War of the Worlds on dvd, and it has beautiful colors, very close to the Technicolor ones. OK, it come from film, not from a miniDV cassette, but it's always mpeg2! how could they obtein these saturation of colors?

NTSC colour is subsampled at 4:1:1 and PAL at 4:2:0
Then you have the 625 lines in PAL vs the 525 lines in NTSC

6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

do you think that may work rising up the kbps with compressor? what values do you suggest for average bit rate and maximum bit rate? there are other settings? and DVD Studio Pro has settings to change too?

I dont know about DVD studio, but if i am trying to make something like a good quality, i use about 8000 for bitrate, i havent done much research on this in the last time, but i guess you can also make it better if you use CBR instead of a constant bitrate(hope i didnt mix it up here..), still interesting question if this will help to preserve your colour room in a better way!?

I am a pc guy and working with the HVX and Edius, have to say that i still like the colours very much, even when i export with 2500 bitrate..so maybe its worth e try to encode the mpeg with a different tool, although i guess DVD studio should give you all you need...test test test...and then report back!

thx Germanboy! I'll try to make a few experiment and I'll report back everything.
Have you never got problems with 8 kbps DVD?

Not yet..had a DVD that sold about 2000 times, had just one coming back...anyway, this wasnt printed on my computer, but done by a company, so i guess it has to do with a lot of factors, like DVD-type you use and so on...!

Maybe its a little risky, guess people would rather recommend you something around 6 kbps....!?
