Schoeps CMIT5U or Sennheiser 416

I am trying to decide which shotgun to get. I have a Schoeps cmc6u mk-41. When the actors move outside and I change to the shotgun, do I really need to spend the extra $$ on the schoeps to make the dialogue match better? Is the schoeps worth $700 more? I am hoping to go with the 416.

the 416 is a really good shotgun. and there is certainly no need for you to HAVE to buy a CMIT to match the interior sound. no way.

that said, however, the CMIT will undoubtedly sound better than the 416, as would a sanken cs-3e.

but if you like the 416, go for it, i doubt you'll regret it. :)

there is no match any way -the interiors are interiors and the exteriors are sounds very different , i prefer the cs-3 for it much forgiving pattern then 416
and much better side rejection then any other shotgun for low fq
the self noise which oi higher then schoeps is nothing in real life except if you are working in the desert from 6 feet with mumbling actor .
the sc is also live very nicely inside the house as it has less reverb pickup
working for me for 99% of exterior shotes
the 500 you save on the schoeps spend on vacation from this board :-)

forget to mention , the cs-3 doesnt have proximity effect so the sound stay the same , try to do it with 416 ;-)

and you have the 416 right tim? Even if I got that, I would just want the sanken later.. darnit, this is getting expensive.

Is the kzepp good enough?

i have the 416, but mine is very old and starting to show its age a bit now. the k zep is a really nice little zep (i have one). its a bit heavier than the rycote, so I try to limit using it to when i NEED to rather than just keeping it in there always. i have a rycote softy for normal to moderate wind that works great. so either way im covered.

im actually in the process of trying to stabilise my gear purchases, so im going to be upgrading my boom mics to the highest level i can this year. Then I'll be sorted on mixer, boom and boom mics. Then I can start sorting out wireless - which is a long climb up a slippery slope.

what shockmount do you use? do you just use the one that comes with the kzep? I have a kssm (soft bands), but that won't work with a softie right? I think I need to get the ksm and a softie to start then or hmmm. I was planning on using the kzep's shockmount darnit. Now I think I will just get the softie to start.

Looks like you are in need of a cure lately. You got it bad. I agree with the others. All three mics are good, Schoeps is probably overpriced compared to others but if you got the cash...

The Sanken is good and might suit your needs better then the 416.

If you can wait, Trew is opening a branch in Vancouver, and you can go play with all three and save a few bucks on your choice (Canadian purchases usually a little cheaper). I am anxiously looking forward to visiting their new store.

Cheers

Wow, when does it open? We gotta do a road trip!!

I am waiting until I need to shoot outside.

You were right BTW, I did my first Schoeps shoot yesterday and I splt the tracks mke2 gold and cmc6u mk-41 the other. When I got home and A/B'd them it was crazy....just crazy!

I use a rycote shock mount with the softy, and the kzep shock mount with the kzep. the one that comes with the kzep wouldnt work with a softy - too long. In my opinion, theres nothing wrong with starting with a softy if you dont expect non-negotiable shooting in high wind.

road trip to canada? lucky buggers. canada, LA, seattle, whatever - its all bloody far from me!
