FCP5 level 1 or wait till FCP6 comes out?

If I take the End User certification now and will be FCP5 level 1

Will I need to retake the test to be FCP6 level 1?
Can I go on from having FCP5 level 1 to just getting my FCP6 level 2 and FCP6 level 3 ??

Should I just wait to take the certification exam until after FCP6 is out in a couple of months? Is it worth it?

Thanks everyone

Yes, otherwise you remain version 5 certified.

Will depend, sometimes Apple's allowed it, sometimes not. I'll check and get you something definite on the current program.

It's going to be more than just FCP6 coming out, it'll be when the FCP6 book comes out and the new tests are on-line. They don't always happen at the same time.

I'm not positive FCP 6 is out in a couple of months. We'll find out an announced timeline at NAB. But remember, most stuff that isn't shipping at NAB is said to ship "in a few months" - and it usually takes longer than that...

BenB - I have just passed the Level 1 FCP certiification (yay!) and am/was planning to go for Level 2 in the next couple of months. I, too, would be interested to know what, historically, the "upgrade path" for certification has been. Thanks for any info you can provide!!

Ok, Apple won't "officially" announce certification tracks for a new version of software until the version of that software is released. Normally, you are required to have the Level 1 certification for the CURRENT version of FCP before you can take tests for the advanced levels.

So, if you get Level 1 cert'd for FCP 5.1, you'll have to get re-cert'd for Level 1 when version 6.0 is released. That is in order to be "version 6, Level 1", which is different from "version 5.0 Level 1." I know us trainers have to recert all the time. It goes with the teritorry. Once you get cert'd, you're in a new race. It's not for everybody, but, it can be worth it. You will learn a lot more about FCP than you already knew before, if nothing else.

Wow! That means it's a pretty expensive proposition to stay certified. If you get to Level 3, as it stands Apple requires a course to certify past Level 1. So, to get "re" certified at Level 2 then 3 every couple of years can cost $1500 to $2000 or more!! Hmm... I may have to re-think this.

Wow, thanks for finding this out BenB, quick too!

TVH I had thought of this also. I don't know if it will be beneficial to even get certified in FCP5 at this time since FCP6 is comming soon.

Not sure if I should wait now or go head and get level 1 cert

5.1 cert now will get you up to speed fastest. It'll also make the 6.0 easier. But, the tests are a pop of cash each time you take them. So budget your career training!

I don't feel so bad about Level 1. Here in San Fran I paid $75 to take the test. Paying another $75 to take the FCP6 exam isn't the part that would hurt. Apple requires that you take a course for Levels 2 & 3 and the courses are $750-1000 (or more) for each level. At this point, I am not aware of any cheaper/shorter "upgrade" class so it means you have to re-ante for the courses each time they upgrade the software.

I am going to wait until NAB just to see what the timing might be for FCP6 (assuming Apple annouces something) and then decide whether it makes sense to wait or not. Meanwhile I just may go for the Level 1 certs in Motion, Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro.

BenB - I thought of another question I thought you might have an answer for...

If one has higher level certification for FCP5, do you have to start over and "climb the ladder" to get Level 3 for FCP6 or can you "jump across" to take the FCP6 Level 3 exam right away?

Thanks again.
