HD and older Movies: They look like new!

I also have Apocalypse Now, Shawshank, Trainspotting, War of the Worlds and the Big Lebowski in HD on the DVR. :)

Dude. I refuse to remove War of the Worlds from my HD DVR... it's sooooo sick.

On me HD-DVR right now: War of the Worlds, The Chumbscrubber (Beautiful), Lemony Snickets (awesome in HD), Sin City (Come on, it's gorgeous), Blade Runner, The Faculty (awesomeness horror camp), And the Masters of Horror Episode shot on the HVX: The Screwfly Solution.

Dang, I missed Sin City. I also have Screwfly Solution in HD. I thought the episode in general sucked, but the HVX held up well.

Uprezzing? No no no no no!

They go back to the film and re-transfer to HD. Telecine is the process to get film to video. Think of it as a scanner - broadcast and DVD material is transferred at D1 res - 720x486 pixels. HD transfers are typically done in 1080p, so 1920x1080 - LOTS MORE pixels and detail. The detail was always in there, just that standard def transfers are low res. Funny how everybody locks in on broadcast res as "that's as good as it gets" - no it isn't, NTSC is a 60 year old standard!

Well said. NTSC...ugh! The longest extinction process in technological history! Wait...no...that would be film. :)

As for breathing new life into movies, I recently got a 60" 1080p HDTV and digital HD cable and WOW it looks detailed. Unfortunately a lot of compression artifacts, but still looks so much better than regular cable.

Interesting. I find that the cable companies overcompress (they call it "rate shaping")
in general...and it's inconsistent from one system to another. I have Dish Network and the new MPEG 4 HD channels look noticeably better than the older MPEG 2 system, which for HD channels was still pretty decent.

Older movies like McCabe and Mrs. Miller are odd to see in HD - that old 70s looking film stock, lighting, makeup, wardrobe etc. pins it to that era, but the high def detail is the new life in it.

I think that's one of the fascinating things about newer HD transfers. Yeah, the older stocks are obvious, but I love seeing the redeemed detail that we could never dream of even with DVD.

Watching Corpse Bride on HD-DVD, noted how incredibly clean it was - because shot on a digital still camera, not on film (it is a stop motion movie).

Yes, Corpse Bride is insane on a 1080p TV. Absolutely frighteningly pure. Kinda scares me even for the RED.

Good times? Scary times! ;)

which DVR records in HD?!?!?!?!?

Tivo's DirecTV 250GB unit.

Dish Network has a couple of units, and I believe each digital cable system now has their own too.

OHHHHHHH is there ANY WAY you can get me Bladerunner hd? is it at all posssible?

The broadcast HD version is nice, but I'm sure an HD DVD or Blu Ray release will put it to shame. I've captured quite a few HD broadcasts in HD with my Kona card just to analyze it. They are very interesting, but the quality isn't nearly as good as HD DVD or BluRay with VC1 or h.264 compression and better bitrates.

It's worth waiting for a HD release.

Yeah. I'm just giving it til after NAB (like a lot of things) to invest in an HD-DVD player and such. Til then, Broadcast HD is pretty good.

Broadcast HD is kaka compared to the disc formats. Most broadcasts blow up 2.35:1 movies to 1.78:1 as well. And the compression can be real bad sometimes. For me the jump from broadcast to HD DVD and BD was almost as important as going from SD to HD Broadcast.

Agreed, but not all HD broadcasts are the same. HDNET Movies does a nice job with their transfers and actual encoding.

lol. yup , kaka, like this.
