Flicker/Artifacting in final output

I've been having the same problem of artifacting or pixilation (not sure exactly what it's called) in my final DVD output. It's been happening with footage shot in both 24P and 60i on the DVX.

I edit in a normal 29.97 timeline, export to Compressor, choose MPEG-2 DVD best quality 90 minutes, and burn with DVD studio Pro.

The DVD looks fine on my computer, but on TV monitors it has awful flicker/artifacting, usually on the outline of somebody's body, or on a hand when it's in motion, etc.

Anyone know what the problem might be? Could there be some setting in my FCP or compressor that's causing this problem?

All I need is to be able to burn a simple DVD that will play the footage, which, in most cases, have not had effects or anything added in FCP.

Thanks for any insight on this.

Could be an interlacing issue. Check that your sequence preset, output settings, Compressor preset, etc. are all using the (same) interlacing field order. For NTSC DV, it should be set to LOWER (EVEN).

Are you upscaling/zooming the footage? Applying any particular filters?

Are you looking at the original in FCP via a broadcast monitor or external TV monitor? If not, the artifacting could be happening in your Timeline and you'd never know it.

Video Ediitng Rule #1: Your computer screen lies to you.

im not upscaling/zooming or applying any filters at all.

and benb- no, unfortunately im working from my computer screens (and im well aware of what this means in terms of the reliability of what im seeing), but ive logged lots of footage on an external monitor, and never had any problems. its only when i play the dvds, after all is said and done. unless...is it possible that footage that has artifacting would look fine when played back through a minidv camera into a broadcast monitor from the tape, and that the artifacting wouldnt be uncovered until capture, at which point im no longer looking at the footage on my monitor, but on a computer screen??? (seems unlikely to me, but im not rulig anything out)

i haven't had a chance to check all my presets for interlacing field order yet, but thanks for the tip Cools. i'll do that as soon as im back at my computer. hopefully thats where the problem lies, otherwise, back to the drawing board. SO frustrating...

my sequence preset is correctly set to lower (even), but im not sure how to check this feature on my output settings or compressor settings as you (cools) suggested. where should i go to check these?
