I've been using Sony for DVD-R and Fuji for DVD+RW. I've had problems only with DVD-R and only because DVDSP burns at the maximum speed and there's no way to change that. So I create an .img and burn with Disk Utility at 4x and have never had a problem with a single DVD I've burned since starting that.
Just becareful with CompUSA brand DVDs! I found out the hard way a while back. They had a sale for 100 blank DVDs for like $20 and they would not burn for nothing! I kept getting error messages so then I went and bought some Sony's and Philips DVDs everything was cool.
In today's day and age, most of the "name" brands seem to work fine (at least in my experience). By long standing reputation, Tayo Yuden (spelling?) is considered the best. I've certainly never had one of theirs turned into a coaster. After that it would be Rytek/Ridata discs (personally use these a lot myself and think they're great). I also used to use Verbatim and they seemed to be quite solid for me. I'd probably still use them, just that the place geographically closest to me doesn't stock them.
