The best 35mm adapter I've seen so far

Get Ettore down here. He's a folk hero on this thread.

Wayne, I agree with you on that Bokeh discussion - Still sweaty with anticipation on my SGPro R2 arriving BTW - like a kid on the run up to christmas.

Jack - just realised that you're the guy in 18 seconds (a) great movie (b) great performance. Congrats and job well done.

Hey guys(and/or gals),

On Page 2 kyledroid and Jack posted links to some MacGregor footage. I know this thread specifically concerns DOF adapters, but do either of you (or anyone else) know what camera was used with the his adapter? Visual quality was quite good.

And so, I'm not totally OT...

I'm not crying over spilled milk - I enjoyed the original clips posted by rawfa. Although I do hope that this was an artistic decision, because if it were a permanent effect somehow introduced by the adapter, I wouldn't be so hot on that.

letus 35a was used for like 3 shots
the rest was g35

If you don't mind me asking, which shots did you use the letus for, and why?

Did you use the letus because it loses less light or because you can stop down further with it without inducing grain and needed more DoF for some shots?

Also, was the whole thing shot with at 50mm?

By the way, I don't get your "washed out" contention. The G35 washes out like no other:

Nothing a little master ped can't fix. (Or in this case, CC, although it introduces a lot of noise and posterization.)

its washy cause youre flaring....

lol

Partially true (I'm sure if I threw on a mattebox I could reduce the effect drastically), but I have pans from bright windows to darker areas where the whole gamma suddenly shifts, and not in a way that makes sense in terms of flare being the operative factor.

Wax GG acts a lot like an ultracon, except much stronger.

Our preference was to use the letus, but it had some dust in it and I opened it up to clean it and could never get it back together properly.

The shots of the woman in her apartement - everything but in the bed and laundry, were letus. So eatig on the couch. Slicing Cheese. Entering the apartement were Letus. Then after Mac Left I did the sliding shot of the briefcase with the letus. Everything else was g35.

Thanks; I'll watch it again with this in mind.

Really good job, by the way. I've got some quibbles with some stuff in it, but the short looks great and the concept is well executed for the most part.

Timur has made a good point here, and I think it’s important to note. In the adapter world, we seem to misuse the term 'bokeh' to describe the adapters output of the out of focus area's. Now, Bokeh is of course a by-product of the 35mm attached, but depending on the ground glass/image element used, the adapter will 'render' this bokeh in different ways.

This misuse of the term can cause confusion, especially when someone says 'wow, that adapter has great bokeh.'

We really should use the term 'bokeh' to describe what it should - the out of focus areas produced by the 35mm lens.

We should start using a term like 'bokeh rendition' to describe the adapters ability to render that bokeh as it should, meaning, how the bokeh would look if the lens was connected to a film camera.

I think its important to recognise the difference between these 2 seperate things and not to get the 2 mixed up.

The general aim in designing a 35mm adapter is to get the 'bokeh rendition' to match that of film as closely as possible, with as little lightloss as possible.

That is a good piece of info. Thanks James and Tim.

"Bokeh rendition" - just rolls off the tongue really - but just try saying it after a few beers.

Yep - agreed Poilcar - 18 Seconds is great. Jack, I hope you didn't method act that glove/crosswalk scene.:nads:. ouch.

Super convincing - even frame by frame. Very few shorts generate an "OH F*&K" response. It did. Very good work.

Did you get some sleep dude?

Hey Jack,

In case you missed it, I'll ask again - what camera was used on 18 Seconds (and his others if you happen to know)?

Thanks!

There was another take of me in the street where I run out of it mid take because there are cars coming.

(gotta love shooting NYC in the middle of the road with no permits)

I rotoscoped me out of the few frames where I turn and stand from that take and rotate the paper doll version of me counter clockwise as the car comes over me. I used photoshop to ben my right arm down and I painted shadows in with the shape tool in Motion. I used the shots of me getting up as there was already some motion blur. I added more, but if you pick it apart frame by frame you will see that the motion blur of the car is much more extreme and it should be for me as well.

yep, just got up a few minutes a go ... to discover that the friend's dog I am taking care of left me a nice steamy pile in the middle of the hall. It looked at me like Chet in Weird Science and said "Good morning Jack". Good morning indeed.
