cleaning up heavy windy noise in STP

Has anyone had any success with STP noise reduction concerning heavy wind gusts of noise during an outdoor interview? Settings...? Is the noise reduction feature in STP capable of cleaning up such challenges or need i go elsewhere?

Thanks

Ok, first of all try cutting some low frecuencies, try it around 160 or 180 Hz or as it works. After you do that normalize the clip and after that apply the noise reduction feature. Play around with the clip and if you don't get to it send me a PM and I'll try to help you via MSN messenger or something like that.

Good luck

Thank you. I tried playing around with the low frequency cut ... as you mentioned. It's getting better. I'm new to using the noise reduction feature. I guess there's no automated way to ensure the maximum possible noise reduction that STP can offer...as noise reduction goes, is this program heavy duty?

As far as good noise reduction goes, STP is at the low end. The more you spend the better it gets. You can get Sound Soap as the next step up. Then the DINR plugin for ProTools. Then you need to hire a dub house with a CEDAR system.

For next time, best way to noise reduce windy audio is to not shoot in locations with excessive wind noise in the first place. Or if impossible to avoid, mic as close as possible with a windjammered boom:

I have really great success with the noise reduction process in STP. In fact, I trashed Sound Soap when ST got upgraded to Pro. It takes some work, as "noise" means sound that occupies all the frequency ranges. That's pretty hard for something to automate properly. You really need a human ear for it. Take your time, make small adjustments. If the noise is too much, best you'll get is better, not perfect. That's just how noise is...

That's good news right now! Fede:lang also mentioned reducing specific (160-180 Hz) frequencies and using normalize...are there any steps (or tutorials), and features in STP that I should routinely follow in order to max the noise reduction process?

Thanks

A few things to try:

Normalize to 0db
EQ if you are comfortable with it
Run the Noise Reduction routine (noise print, reduce noise)
Throw on a Noise Gate, make its effect minimal
EQ again if you need to reintroduce more punch

I appreciate the info and put it to use. Are there any good STP tutorials online for noise reduction to mixdown with FCP studio? Thanks for all the help.

Just the one on Apple's site, as far as I know. There's so many variables, different clips will require different techniques and settings. You need to just play with it and figure it out, clip by clip.

Thanks, just checking in case...toward full audio applications/demonstrations for the increasing number of film projects made by musicians.
