1080p on my home computer? Yes or No?

Does anybody know what's required to watch 1080p on my PC? What's involved to have full HD DVD playback... is it as simple as it seems or do I need to make some changes?

I'm also wondering if anybody has an LCD or DLP or Plasma hooked up... but the main thing I want to know is what it takes to play a 1080p disk back on my PC?

Thanks for your help.

You need a monitor that's big enough for the resolution. (1920x1080 or bigger)

You need a video card which can support it. (Most 128MB or better cards can.)

You need a CPU fast enough to play it.

You need the software necessary to play it.

If an optical disc, you need a drive which can play it.

So let's suppose I have a Dell 24" that does that res... and then a 3gig P4 w/ 1gig of 2-2-2 memory... and a 512mb 6800gt OC card... all that should do it shouldn't it? Or am I completely off-base? The monitor is capable by spec... what about the rest? Am I even in the ballpark or should I forget this idea?

So after that... I guess we're waiting for 1080p tech prices to come down right?

Can a normal DVD-rom for PC play 720p?

And about that software... do you have any suggestions?

are we talking about watching a clip in 1080p or watching something like an hd dvd movie?

if you want to watch an hd dvd movie you'll need an hd dvd player. if you want to watch blue ray, you'll need a blue ray player.

you may also need an hdcp compliant monitor and video card.

Sorry guys... I was in Ultimate Electronics today and got myself drooling as I watched about 10 minutes of The Corpse Bride in HD... and I think my brain may have slipped about 2+ years into the future when I posted this question. My bad.

well, it also depeds on the codec.

My laptop:
3.2gightz P4
2gig RAM
128bit X600 card

It can play WMVHD9 at 1080P 30P butter smooth. But it cant even play quicktime 480P smoothly.

IT depends on whetehr the hddvd codec is efficient or not. Also on that note, its sad WMV9HD isnt used more, its a REALLY great HD codec.
