Got Video but no Audio on import of file clip

I have a clip actually its already a mpeg file of a short video I edited back in 2003. I need to add more footage to that video. When I open the file on my external hard drive, it plays fine both video and audio. When imported the same file into FCP, I got the video but no audio! So why is the audio not being imported with the video? When I slide the little slider across it says I have 1V and no audio tracks listed, but they ARE there!!!

Am I going to need to have to convert the mpeg file over to .mov file is that should matter? It's a QT mpeg file though.

QuickTime is a whole library of codecs, there's no generic QT file format. If you're final output is NTSC, then open it in QT Player, and Export it as NTSC. I belive you have a MUXED MPEG-2 file, the worst kind to edit. MPEG-2 just sucks as an editing format anyway. Convert it with QTPro and you should be good to go.
