Moving to LA, maybe next week

I live in NoHo as well. The best thing about this area is the inexpensive rent. You're still within minutes of things that go on though. Universal City is about 5 miles from here and Ventura Blvd isn't far either.

Exactly! I dig the area for all those reasons.

I'm moving back to good ole LA next month. Got to check NoHo out. I love Studio City. Time to party with Charli, Timur, DC, Tommy.

Woo hoo!

Yep Santa Monica is what you want. I walked on the promenade I think it is with the wife on valentines day just waiting for traffic to die down from rush hour and the wife thought I planned it. :)
I live in Reseda by encino for $950 a month 1 bed room. That is a steal in LA. It seems like a retirement community around here.
Also I think www.westsiderentals.com is a great site that is how I found my apartment. It beats riding around in that awful LA traffic looking at No Vacancy signs. I lived in Newbury Park also and it is Mayberry in California. Don't move here because you will think life is to perfect and never want to do anything. I am so lucky I got out. :)

Scott - I speak some Spanish (it was my first language) but I don't speak it well enough to understand the Spanish news, but enough to get by. I can also write in Spanish, but very roughly since I haven't needed to over the years. I secured the job in Santa Cuz because I spoke Spanish and got along with the entire staff. Boy, was it rough going in the beginning. I was calling the ceiling the heavens - lol.

Kholi - we should hook up after I'm settled.

Noel - see you when you're down here.

Hey Charli,

I think your concept of spending a month in an area before deciding on a permanent move is well reasoned. I would definitely suggest you rent a car (if you don't have one of your own here) and you drive in each area you are considering to see what you will be up against. I live in Northern OC which is only about 30 miles from Hollywood, but the commute time can vary 5 to 1 depending upon traffic. On a Sunday morning I can be at any of the studios in 25 to 35 minutes. On a Friday afternoon, it can take 2 1/2 hours to get home. So Cal is a great area, but LA is very segmented. I wouldn't just consider things by a city, but by on a neighborhood level.

Best of luck and perhaps we can hook up sometime when you are here.

khum - would love to meet you.

Sad - I'm all up for a bash.

Brandon - I needed a career move.

Hey Charli, I just wanted to give you a bit of warning from a New Yorker (not at all ready to say ex-New Yorker!)...

When people talk about "5 minutes from..." or "20 minutes from..." they're talking about driving time (not walking), with no traffic. That doesn't generally include parking time (or cost of parking, or both). More and more neighborhoods around LA are changing regulations so that only residents can park on the street (Most of the areas near the Santa Monica promenade switched over 2 years ago)... good for where you live, bad for where you visit. So a five minute trip is often a 15-minute drive followed by 10-minutes dealing with parking (or valets - another ubiquitous pest). And of course, public transportation in most of LA sucks....

Santa Monica is big... apartments within a few blocks of the beach/promenade are certainly in the super-$2,000 range, but if you can be ten blocks away there's a lot of cheaper places, and still interesting walkable areas. I guess you'll be here to see soon enough... I just wanted to give you the warning about walking vs. driving time, 'cause when I first got here and asked for directions, I was used to the opposite. I like long walks, but sometimes you don't have the extra 2 hours for a "five minute" trip...

Yeah parking's a biotch here. I hate going places because of it. But, eh, it's the price you pay for the place you stay.

I think Charli will fare well. And yes, Charli, especially when I get to working on some more projects with DVXusers. We shall meet.

ullanta - hey, thanks for the tip, I think in my head I always thought the time was driving time, not parking. Try to find parking downtown Santa Cruz, so I'm use to it. I learned to walk or bike most places. I have a folding bike, so I really love to bike around town. Hope to see you in LA, ullanta.

kholi - projects, no projects, we should still get together.

How far away is Glendale..?? Is it expensive to live there ? Just curious.. I too was considering the move, and several folks told me to check this out as well ? Any advice, other than sharing a bathroom with Charli.. lol

Glendale is the East Valley. It's not a bad area at all. They really try to keep that place nice and clean. As a matter of fact, you won't find a single topless bar in Glendale. They don't allow it. Don't ask me how I know this...

I don't believe rent is that expensive in Glendale, though you might want to check out craigslist. As far as proximity to things, you're close to quite a few studios that are located in Burbank - like the WB, CBS (not quite Burbank, but close) and Disney.

I'm telling ya. Motorcycle's the way to go.
I heartily agree! Except that whole "injury/death" aspect that likely comes with riding a bike in Los Angles.

I love bikes. I really do. I've known many people that ride 'em in this town. All have been in accidents with significantly larger vehicles driven by lunatics. Fortunately, no one I know has died (yet).

Well, there's two kinds of motorcyclists - the kind that have crashed, and the kind that are going to crash. Comes with the territory.

Three years ago, Halloween Eve, I got smacked by a Pontiac-driving doofus on the I-10. Totalled my bike, totalled his car, four eyewitnesses put the fault 100% on the car driver - and his insurance company still tried to pin 50% liability on me (but in the end was forced to cover him for 100%).

So I know where you're coming from.

I'll toss in my 2 cents too. I've lived in Hollywood (Franklin & Beachwood), near the Grove (Fairfax & Beverly) and near Beverly Hills (Pico & Robertson and La Cienega & Olympic) and I've liked living near Beverly Hills the best. 9/10 Olympic is the quickest way to go East/West and it's fairly centrally located.

I've worked in NoHo and have some friends in Burbank, but I've never wanted to live in the Valley. It just doesn't appeal to me... and it's freakin' hot. It's like 10-15 degrees hotter in the summer time compared to the other side of the hill.
