My $1000 plan

So we keep getting closer and closer to being ready to have our movie started... And with tax returns, we are ready to order our audio equipment.

After reading reading and reading, it looks like we are going to end up with:

Oktava MK012 - $180
Rode NTG1(or 2) - $250
Rycote BBG - $70
K-Tek K-Zep & KGPS(size?) - $300
Rycote Softie(size?) - $110
Gitzo G-557C Boom - $190

That puts me at $1100 without cables...

Is the NTG-2 the new NTG-1 or is it a different mic all together? I only ask because the new to audio says the NTG-1 and that was a year ago...

Suggestions? Or am I ready to order tomorrow?
Thanks

I'd personally go for some AKG blue line mics, what are you doing about a mixer?

The BBG is $140 and it would be ideal to get the kssm shockmount (100 @ trew) for your oktava (other shockmounts have a hard time holding the short oktava if it is down far enough inside the bbg). The NTG1 can only operate w/ phantom only and the ntg2 can do either phantom or single aa battery. You probably could get away with either the ktek zepp or the softie. The kzepp comes with a shockmount for your shotgun (won't work for oktava). For $250 you could get the 12.5' carbon fibr gitzo and I would do that if you can. Don't forget your Sony 7506 headphones VERY Important! Get good cables (trew sells great stuff)!

The blueline is also nice but about $300 more ($500ish) for the power supply with the ck93 capsule (in place of the oktava). Worth it if you can get it but, better wind protection, pole and shockmount are more important. You can always get the blueline later and use it with your nice pole, bbg and kssm.

If you have $665-$1200 left over after the above get a Sound Devices 302 or Mixpre

Hi Skits,

Yes, that looks like you're on the right track. I went with the K-Tec boom and internal XLR cable. And like you, I forgot the shockmount (or I should say the one I own wasn't right) - ended up ordering the Rode ROSM3. Others may have their preferences...

I got the 22m BBG which just barely fits over the lip of the Octava hyper-cardiod). But once I learned here form others that the BBG unscrews into two pieces and you can put on the hyper after poking the body through the BBG (well kept Rycote secret), I realize that 20mm is the preferred size - thank goodness for gaffers tape.

If you don't have a sound guy, you can pass on the mixer. In that case, consider a Matthews Hollywood Grip Head (2 1/2 inch and General Brand Boom Pole holder for your C-stand.

I wasnt sure which bbg people were refering to, so I was hoping it was the $70 one...

We dont have a "sound guy", so we are just going into the dvx. One of the three of us that isnt in the shot will be holding the boom, or it will be on a stand.

I didnt know the kzep mount wouldnt work with the oktava, would I be better off going with a different windblocker and getting just the kssm mount?

Thanks again, its appreciated

As already pointed out you have forgotten headphones and a boom pole (unless you already have them). You can probably skip the softie if you are getting the zeppelin. Skipping the mixer is a bold move but done often enough with varying degrees of success.

You will also need some way to allow your boom op to listen to what he is doing. Duplex cable, headphone amp, etc

Good luck

Since you're doing an in-house production and can control the talent's (your) voice and always do a retake, the luxury of a top mixer can come after you find the IRS makes a mistake and gives you some extra chump change. Sorry about missing your nomenclature on the mic holder - if "KGPS" refers to your mic holder, disregard everything before and after I say here <wink>

We have access to a mixer so I guess we should if we can? Then run the mixer into the dvx via xlr?

So Ill skip the softie, add a kssm, add a sony 7506.

Suggestions on a duplex cable? or a headphone amp? At this point I guess Im all about whats cheaper... It really sucks dumping a grand into something and it being low end

again, thanks

ya, the KGPS is the shockmount that comes with the zep

Opps...somehow I missed that. You might want to consider the Ktek KE110 pole; it's lighter and Ktek has a much better history of making quality poles.

If you are looking for cheap you could find a headphone amp for under $100 (Rode makes a cheapo that works as well as it costs). You could probably gaff tape a 50' headphone cable to your XLR if you want really cheap...but sloppy.

A Duplex cable or decent headphone amp will cost a couple hundred.

Cheers

Sloppy, but entirely functional. This is an especially good route if you forsee investing in an ENG mixer down the road: higher end models will often have multi-pin connectors for an ENG snake. When you eventually enjoy the luxury of an ENG snake, you'll be able to simply peel off all the tape on your makeshift duplex cable and use the two cables for other tasks.

Just take care that you tape them together in such a way that they'll still coil propperly. Lay them out flat, side by side, and make sure that there aren't any twists in the rubber before taping them together.

Oh yeah, and budget for a set of spare cables.

I just ment that I got the 12'5" gitzo for $250 and it is really really nice. You can get it where it needs to be a lot easier. The 20mm Baby Ball Gag costs $140 sorry

My suggestion was in reply to his original pole choice. Your 12' Gitzo is a fine choice too. You will have to let me play with your pole sometime....errrr, you know what I mean. ;)

Cheers

Ya wabbit, we should work on something soon (I am going to go ahead and ignore the pole comment). I was on the fence between the K-Teks and the Gitzos. It seemed like I could only afford a shorter K-Tek aluminum pole for that amount of money ($250). I asked MattinSTL who has the K-Tek 9' graphite pole ($600 or so) and the Gitzo and he said to go for the Gitzo over the shorter aluminum K-Tek since (for the money) you got more reach and a more acousticly dead pole(vs. the aluminum k-tek) he says he uses the Gitzo more often because of reach. I also teach video production and we got one of the smaller Gitzo poles and it is nowhere near as nice or solid as the 12'5" pole. The locks on the 12'5" are much nicer and the whole pole is thicker and better (not much heavier either). Having that extra reach can make your life a whole lot easier too! I know the K-Teks are even nicer than the Gitzos, so I would be anxious to try one out. And possibly get one someday when I am rich and powerful!

the kssm is special shockmout made really short mics like the schoeps and the oktava. I don't think the kzepp shockmount will work (too long)

This is one of those situations when you need two things, one for each mic.
