Marshall VLCD4PROL vs Varizoom VZ-TFT7U

Hey all,

Going to be in the market soon for a monitor for my hvx. I was looking all over the site and the bulk of talk was on HD monitors not basic viewable sd.. Basically I will be looking for amonitor to do two things 1) pull off crane shots and 2) a monitor for directors to watch while the dp/camera does his thing.

So basically I am just looking for a viewable, nothing extemely technical. Since the hvx uses the 4:3 aspect when in 720 mode, it seems like a 4:3 will be the smarter move.

It sounds like I may have narrowed it down to two monitors: Marshall VLCD4PROL or Varizoom VZ-TFT7

I like the marshall for the durability, bnc connectors, and their battery pack setup is a little cheaper. The varizoom model is 16:9 and their battery setup is a little more convienent and extra batteries are cheap.

I dont need to use the focus assist feature on the monitor since I could use the camera's lcd to do that.

My biggest concern, I have had trouble finding a portable crt field monitor, something under 9" that is not huge and somewhat easy to transport (around the same price range of an LCD). I prefere them since color/satuartion/brightness and contrast are usually way more acurate. They claim this two monitors are both broadcast quality, does that mean when I view the feed on them, I will see what the camera sees like a field crt would be? If thats the case, what does everyone recommend between the two above.

I can get the marshall at a great price also, $250 at adorama.com, so it seems like that is the best buy.

Thank you!
Tim

Ahh, I assumed that since the camera displays the video as 4:3 on the lcd it would output it as 4:3, but I see now it is output as 16:9.

Check this out:

On bh it goes for $300, it takes 3 bnc component connectors, the resolution is very high. This seems like it could be a steal, but they dont state if it 16:9 switchable, since the aspect ratio is obviously 4:3. It also does not say anything on sdi also, but I would assume that not having sdi does not mean I cannot display 720p using component bnc connections or does it?

This seems like it could be a best kept secret on bh, any thoughts?

This might be all I need since I just need a monitor for crane shots and my directors to watch when I am on camera.

I have confirmation from the manual that this monitor supports 480/60i, which I can handle. The big question now is how it displays 16:9 footage. Does it distort or does it put the letterboxes. IT does auto adjust when in pc mode (has vga input).

I really like the idea of this monitor also since I could look at using either the camera to show the editing timeline through the camera or use a decklink pro to view the editing timeline.

Anyone using this monitor or know if it will display the video feed from the hvx200 (16:9) without distorting it?

I have the marshall monitor you're looking at and I don't recommend it. The image is very dark and the controls don't do much to improve it. It was a waste of $$. Others may have had a better experience. You have to switch the HVX to output 480i via composite and it displays in letterbox but again it's not that great. I also had two of the BNC connectors come loose inside which required disassembling to fix.
