Can you get in trouble for this?

Serious question.

For some odd reason, I'm starting to get a lot of drag queens and transvestites replying to my casting ad for a "female actress to play seductive role." a lot of these drag queens are looking pretty rough too.

is it against some kind of law if I include some kind of disclaimer in my casting ad excluding drag queens/transvestites from the casting auditions???

No offense, but that's really not what i'm looking for but i dont want to start getting bombarded with hate mail and death threats either. i dont know if this violates some kind of gay rights law or something???

SAG has some pretty well-known "guidelines" for instances like this. for example, you cannot ask an actor their real age, only their range of playable ages. i do not know if there is a similar convention for gender.

Somehow, I doubt it. You ask for a female, you should get a female, and nothing in between. You need a tall black person, why should you get a short asian? If there is nothing stating the character needed, the role is pretty open. If you ask specifically for someone, that is what you will get.

yeah, that's the other thing i forgot to mention. when you put out a casting call, even if its for a white guy in his mid-forties, you are going to get a ton headshots from actors in their thirties and fifties. but you can't blame them. your typical actor gets very little work. so you are going to get submissions that are way off the mark that you have to sort through. its to be expected.

I say hire one of the trannies - rewrite the script and make it The Crying Game part 2...

I like to know too actually. Not specifically about the gender issue but rather how do you put some guidelines on casting calls without looking like an ass.

actors are going to send you their headshot whether they are right for the part or not. they want to work. they're desperate for work. i once had a casting call for a filipino character. i got more headshots from white girls than anyone else.

go ahead and put your guidelines up but i'm telling you, it won't make a difference. this is the reason to employ a casting director. they know what youre looking for and can put the appropriate people in front of you.

and really, it only takes a matter of seconds to sort them into the "NO" pile.

I agree with Zac, it only takes a second to either delete those that don't fit, or to send them a premade reject letter if you want to be nice.

I have a question something like this... but not...

What if you want a chunky chick... But theres a chunky chick that comes to audition for the hot chick role... But this chick can act... So you think she'd be good for the part of the chunky chick... You ask her... And she says, "Hey, I'm not fat!" But in all actuality... She is... But she's declining it and coursin you out and what not... Can she like... Go to somebody and get you in trouble for that? Sayin' you insulted her or somethin like that...

I mean, theres a lotta big chicks that think they're not big... They actually think they're sexy... Ya know? But they are what they are...

where are you doing your casting calls that you're getting the trannys? It smells like craigslist to me lol. mandy.com offer's free listings i get a lot of hits from there, real girls too.

futureD: i'd probably suggest not refering to the 'chunky chick' character as chunky, explain to the actress the difference between the characters which is hopefully more than, "well this one's hot, but the other's chunky", and that you would be interested in casting her for a role as 'chunky chick' (might want to give the character a name or something... like roseanne, or anna nicole, something that suggests frumpy)

you should be making the offer to her agent.

Don't automatically reject anyone.

Sometimes you gotta think outside the box.

And that probably only sounds dirty to the older guys here.

Hire someone to set it up for you. You should only be telling the actresses yes or no if that.

Not why. Your waisting valuable time on sensitivity issues.

Pay someone to do what you can't or won't do.

Alot of people would do it for the power of telling someone no.

I needed a black drug dealer. We had half of the guys come in being white with glasses. It was an open casting call and eventhough we were spacific on the add they still came in even though they didn't fit the part. Also keep in mind that agencies find your adds and sometimes just send you a massive amount of headshots from their clients even if they don't fit the part. It's really annoying, especially when you say it's a non-union and they're sending nothing but union. I consider that to be headshot spam. I wish I had a headshot spam filter.

I've had that problem too, draven. I even called the agent and bitched her out for spamming me with people that didn't even come close to what I had listed. Not much you can do I guess, but it felt good ripping her a new one, and wasting her time like she wasted mine.

yep, just like these trannies think they are women and in some cases they technically may be, but not really.
