I need to know how to shoot night scenes with little light and still avoid the grainy look as mush as possible. I'm using a dvx100 with M2 adapter with 28mm 1:2,8 50mm 1:1,4 and a 135mm 1:2,5 any one out there to help me?

To do it right, you really need to use some good lighting, and depending on the look your going for (fake blue night look) you can gel the lights or cheat by setting your white balance to I believe 3200 and your scene will look blue. Also lower your master ped as much as possible to make your blacks really black. good luck.

dont shoot with the M2.

instead zoom abit, and back up as much as possible. this way the backgound is still out of focus, somewhat, but the image will still be bright and Clean.

What does a little light mean? One light thats strong or tiny lights that are weak. To be able to use an adapter at night you need to get at least 150watts on the subject for close ups. Maybe a little more for that adapter. For wide shots you are going to be struggling with the M2. They can even be lit nice because the background of darkness will get the point across that its night time.

Agree with the other posts. Good info there.

Keep in mind it's often much easier to increase contrast in post than flatten an already contrasty image, this is most noticeable in darkly lit, or night time images. Try running a test at dusk, with a moderately lit scene, white balanced a bit blue. Then in post darken it and increase the contrast. The results may surprise you how far you can take it to look like night.

I was wondering the same thing, I am about to shoot a short that takes place at night and for us it will be very difficult to get any types of lights on the street, since we don't have a permit to shoot.

I was also wondering if the HVX200 will give a better image on SD at night with available lights vs the DVX?

No. The DVX is a better low-light camera than the HVX (or any of the 1/3" HD cameras).

The DVX is the low light king (along with the Sony PD170), these work great in low light. You have to get to the level of an SDX900 or CineAlta to get better.

The HVX is probably two stops weaker. My eyes tell me the Canon's are maybe a half-stop better, and the Sony V1 a full stop worse, but none of these cameras can match the DVX, not even close.
