I know some people were expecting more.
But it's still one bad a$$ camera, IMO.

DPReview.com, who normally has pretty accurate information, is saying a price of $3999. It's a very nice camera for Canon users but seeing as how it is a 1.3x crop camera that makes me wonder if Canon is backing off the FF push...
 
MkII is a 1.3x body and this is mkIII, I would think it is quite logical to keep it that way. Some (many?) people will upgrade to mkIII from mkII and like to keep the same lens selection optimized for 1.3x crop.

I have EOS-1D mkII, EOS-Ds and EOS-5. Right now 90% of my work is shot with 5D and I have not touched the Ds for months...

I don't buy into the whole full frame thing. personally I think it is a bit like people who adopt medium format. While 35mm and medium both had professional applications the 35mm was more available.

Personally I just haven't drank that kool aid yet.
 
If it is I hope they stop the magapixel race and just make the camera faster (and with bigger LCD screen). 16Mpix 35FF sensor alredy surpasses the sharpness of 35mm lenses and more is not needed. We have already reached the physical limits of optical systems here.

I see less than FF sensor in a 35mm based body as an anomaly (yes, also in EOS-1D) as the camera body & lenses are too big and heavy for the sensor. I am all for FF cameras as long as we use lenses designed for 35mm film format, and with FF sensor we get better sensitivity, too. With a 1.3x to 1.6x crop factor sensor the camera should be correspondingly smaller.

Completely disagree. We're on the verge of the infamous 'medium format' digitals being released.

While these will be very expensive (like film medium format) the MP race is getting ready to explode.

These medium format cameras are going to be very cool... and very insanely priced. Personally, it doesn't interest me at all.
 
I missed you here, there certainly is a place for over 16 Mpix cameras, but it is stupid to make more than 16 Mpix 35mm form factor sensors as the sharpnes of those sensors surpass the imaging capabilities of 35mm lenses even in theoretical level. Even now 5D and Ds mkII make quite identical pictures (12 versus 16 Mpix) because the lenses are the limiting factor not the sensor.

And what comes to mid-format digital cameras we have had those around as long or longer than 35mm digitals. With the best midformat backs (39 Mpix) no midformat lens is good enough anymore, view camera lens manucafturers have started making new super lenses which are diffraction limited at f5.6 because no lens so far was good enough for that 39Mpix back (about the size of 645 film). With those lenses it is possible to get (almost) 4x5 quality.

My first digital was EOS-1D with 4.7 Mpix sensor, plenty of magazine full spreads were made from those images and nobody complained. It was as good or better than what we got from 35mm 100 ASA slide. For normal press work, even magazines, 8 Mpix is enough. For some art publications more is needed and it seems there is considerable confusion even in pro circles about where the pixels come from and what a "30 meg file" means. But that is another story*.

*) some stock photo agencies require 72 MB tiff files, but do not care if the image comes from a 6 Mpix JPG camera...

I really hope they do to, as Full Frame with less pixels will have bigger 'buckets' on the chip and there for let in more light which is the most important thing for me. Id also like to see them concentrate more on Dynamic range as even 6 or 8mp Digital SLRs have more than enough resolution for 90% of applications.

Medium Format dSLR's have been around for a little while... They definitely have their own megapixel race going on: example

I think this looks like a GREAT camera and it definitely seems like a steal at $3999. Although a bunch of other pages are saying that this price may get changed...

...I'll stick with my 30D for a while

Fyi, Tom Cruise's new baby's first photoshoot was done with a certain prototype Canon 22mp body... hint hint
 
22mp? That's a bit pointless with today's glass... after about 16MP (with 35mm lenses) you become optics limited rather than sensor limited - and that's 'best case scenario.' Sort of like how it's ridiculous that these companies sell hand held point and shoots with anything more than 5MP....
 
I think it was on Luminous Landscape or somewhere where they compared 5D and DsMkII (12/16 Mpix) and found out the resolution was about the same with both bodies & lenses. Lenses are the limiting factor, we are approaching (or surpassed) the physical limits of optics with the newest sensors. Take the shot with a 12 Mpix camera and uprezz it to 22 Mpix, the end result is the same if the same lens is used on a 22 Mpix 35mm body...

Unless Canon also has new diffraction limited primes coming up...
