Are you willing to confess? - (wide angle)

Has anyone here purchased one of those cheap-o 72mm wide angle lens adapters off Ebay (you know the ones around $75 to $100) and slapped it on to your DVX?

If any brave sole is willing to admit it, where you at all satisfied with the results? Or was it like flushing $100 down the toilet?

Thanks and much respect to anyone who comes forward.

Yes I have one but it came in a pkg deal, I have noticed that you have to zoom in quite a bit and back up off the subject to get the wide view of of the lens. it also has a macro attatched to the lens...

Ya know I just had it looked at by the promotions shooter editor here at the station and you have to zoom out like %75 just to get rid of the inside barrel of the lens, this type has an adapter ring to fit the camera it doesn't fit on the out side of the lens housing.. Why are you thinking of getting one?? Buy the way I have just purchased 2 dvx100100b's in a kit that came with this lens about a week ago.

I'm trying to avoid dropping several hundred bucks to achieve wide angle (eg. century optics) but I would also like to avoid inconveniences such as having to zoom etc.

I was hoping for someone to say... "yeah, the quality of glass ain't so good but works great for general widening. Take a look at my screen grabs, etc....".

With that said, I have searched this forum high and low and found no such info.

Thanks though.

Your not going to find that kind of info, becuase it doesn't exist. Zooming in for a wide angle makes absolutly no sens, your wide angle has just become a medium telephoto with poor quality becasue you have to zoom in so far, what is the point.
Over and over it is said, you get what you pay for. If you want a decent wide angle you need to spend some bucks.

This isn't in regard to wide angle, but rather the other direction--telephoto--but this thread details a bad experience with a cheap converter. I think this is going to be one of those "you get what you pay for" deals no matter if you're looking for more zoom or more angle--buying a $3500 camera with arguably one of the highest-quality lenses available in the Leica and then throwing a sub-$100 converter in front of that lens has always seemed a bit odd to me. :)

I've done a little research (again on the telephoto end to try and lengthen that 10X zoom a little bit), and from what I understand, vignetting is pretty much inevitable with any of these converters, expensive or inexpensive.

Well I am happy with the pkg I got even though the telephoto and wide angle lens aren't the best, I only spent $3200 for a DVX100B, digitec hard case 10 pack of tapes, lens filters x3, tele photo and wide angle lenses, a tri pod with a pretty good head with soft bag, screen protectors, lens cleaner, head cleaning tape an on camera light (wireless) and a 10 hour lithium ion battery along with a fast charger with a cigarette lighter or wall input and the regular 5 hour battery. I'd say I didn't waste my money thats why I bought two pkg's. I have noticed that a lot of people have been saying that this is a $3500 camera, even though it is worth every penny I really hope every one has done there homework when buying this camera. No one should pay over $2500 for the DVX100B, there is just to much competitive pricing out there.
Back to the topic of wide angle lenses just don't go out and buy a cheap one if it doesn't come with a pkg deal it's just not worth the money go ahead and spend the $300-$600 for a real panasonic one you will not be dissapointed :)

I bought one by Cavision which is $179 for my HVX. Not under $100 but a lot better than $3-$400. The adapter is 72mm and was most likely designed for the DVX, just comes with an adapter for the HVX. It has a considerable fisheye effect but that's what I wanted. Cavision makes a ton of broadcast equipment so it is in a different league from the cheapie on Ebay (Digital Optics?), but probably still not up to the Century. But is is a lot less money and works well for me. There is virtually no vignetting with the Cavision.

That's very true, there are alot of unbelievable deals out there, the problem is 99% of those great deals are either scams, leave you with a grey market camera, or worse. If you pay $2500 for a DVX100B I can guarantee you will get a grey market camera or at the very best a used camera. While grey market is not illeagal and for some people it can work great, just don't ever expect to have warranty services done on your camera.
There are alot of legitamate dealers out there, but like I said before, you get what you pay for.

Wide angle adapters are generally a LOT sharper at the edges than converter lenses. This is because they are single element aspheric lenses instead of multiple lenses in series. I have seen the Century .6x and the .7x side by side and the difference is incredible. The .6x adapter blows the .7x converter away in sharpness and detail. Sincerely,

I purchased one and I didn't have to zoom in. Are you sure you ordered a 72mm lens, or was it a 52mm. The 72 I purchase didn't have any dark corners. Glass, Glass, Glass. I used mine on acouple of shots. I liked the result. Never used it on anything resently though.
