nebtek/marshall R70-HDA vs. Varizoom SWIT 1080

Just for those curious. I have 2 HVX camera, one I have had for 9 months, another I just added with a Redrock M2. I needed a monitor and the Varizoom looked great on the site, one inch larger, same resolution, panasonic battery mount, flip feature, thinner and lighter than the marshall, included hood and case - $500 cheaper. I could not find any user reviews so I thought I would be the guinea pig. The folks at varizoom were great to work with. I ordered one a few weeks ago. Initially I was pleased. Inside it was usable. Colors seemed washed out, and very difficult to focus on - it had that cheap resoultion scaling look (like when you look at a large cheap LCD tv side by side with a high end LCD tv with similar specs).

I tried it for a few days and finally decided to order the Marshall from Nebtek. Rob was very helpful. I just got it in today and it really is worth the extra. It is night and day in terms of focusing. The image looks "right". I think it is the better quality scaling chips the Marshall uses. Anyway, as much as I wanted to use the Varizoom, it is really not a match for the HVX, definately not with the M2 and critical focusing. Anyway, just a FYI. I returned the Varizoom. It was returned with No questions asked. Great company (Varizoom), just not the right product for this application.

Blessings,

I heard from a well known rental company/store who saw it, that the new Varizoom was not that great. I have a Marschall myself, I am very happy with it. I also bought some extra mounting brackets for it, I added one on the side and one on top, making it very easy to mount upside down without having to change the position of my Noga Arm.

I've tried both, and the Varizoom is good enough for critical focus IMO. Seeing as it is the only reason why I need an LCD in the first place, because it is good enough for it, I saw no reason to buy a second Marshall after my first one met its accidental demise.

Does anyone know how I can order the varizoom monitor outside of the US? Since they say they only accept US orders, I really can't finfd no other way to order it...

SPZ: Have you tried Adorama or B&H? http://www.adorama.com/
They ship internationally I believe.

I asked Marshall about the power supply and it will work with the cable I mentioned... That puts the Marshall back in the running for me.

Has anyone done a comparison between the marshall and the VZ with pics yet? It's a pretty tough choice especially when I think about how I could use an extra $400... I'm really on the fence between the two.

Malcom, I saw in one of your previous posts back in June that when you first bought your Marshall you were disappointed in the contrast and loss of detail. Did find a workaround for this or simply get used to it? Did you find the Varizoom to be more of a let down for overall color/contrast/sharpness or are they fairly equal in your opinion? Just out of curiosity, how did your monitor meet its demise?

Thanks a lot mr. terpstar. Just checked the adorama site and they have the monitor in stock. Unfortunatelly we don't have paypal over here, so I'm still figuring how I can pay. but its a very good start! They are charging 1070 (with shipping) for the panasonic battery ready model. Is this a good price?

I've shopped around and Adorama has the best price of the stores I know and trust. Meaning I've ordered from them and have not regretted it. Their customer service is probably on par with B&H, but I'm not super impressed with their support anyway. They take your order and accept returns, but getting someone cheerful and friendly is not to be expected every call.

For me it was going to be $1045 with the cheap shipping so internationally your price sounds about right. Good luck.
