my dvd looks bad on my Tv but great on my portable DVD player

I have a problem. I got a project to edit and the camera opt can't remember if he shot on 24p or 24p advanced.

1. Is there a way to find out what the footage was shot on 24p or 24pa ?

I'm editing on Premiere Pro 1.5 with the Matox 100 RT. I edited on a 29.97 timeline because it is ment for a NTSC TV's. When I did a rough cut and sent it to a DVD straight from Premiere. When I play it on a small portable DVD player and it plays great, yet when I put it on my desktop DVD player and display it on my NTSC TV there is interlacing on movement.

2. Is there something I need to do to the fooatge?
3. Is there something I did wrong ?
4. Was i wrong for editing on a 29.97 timeline for 24p or 24pA footage?

Thanks in advance,

-Jay

Deinterlace the footage on export. And, as I just found out one thread ago, you need to export to DVD on something other than Premiere. Like Adobe Encore. Which I'll be doing soon. I'll let you now how it goes.

Premiere 1.5 has a bug in the way it handles 24p footage. You're probably seeing choppy motion, and what looks like double frames? My best advice would be to download the trial of Premiere Pro 2.0 and finish out the project from there. Then rob, cheat, and steal to buy the upgrade to 2.0.

If you shot 24pa, Premiere will edit this without issue in a 23.976 timeline.
If you shot 24p, Premiere doesn't remove the 3:2 pulldown correctly.
If you try and edit 24p footage in a 29.97 timeline, Premiere still removes the pulldown and you'll see the footage displayed at 23.976. When you actually want it to be at 29.97. There is a workaround that involves saving your files using the 24p advanced settings and then re-importing them, but I'd say it's easier to download the demo and open your projects in that. 2.0 handles all flavors of 24p correctly.

C.G., I'll check your thread, you should be able to export mpeg-2 for DVD without problem. And never deinterlace progressive footage.

c.g._eads,
I will try that soon, will post my result.

Thanks Sacksnack,
Ok, so there is no way of convertion my 24p timeline to a 29.97 timeline.

ChrisLyon,
Sorry you found my post "really weird and misleading" didn't mean to confuse you.

I had a similar problem exporting on Final Cut Pro. I was just dragging and dropping the footage into DVD Pro, and the DVD's looked great on LCD screens and crappy everywhere else.

I then started using compressor, and learned that the DVD compression settings make a huge difference for normal TV's - not so much for high quality ones.

So, my guess is it has to do with settings. I've never made a DVD out of Adobe, or Encore, but there has to be some high quality setting similar to FCP and Compression , that will fix the problem.

hope that helps, I realize I'm kinda comparing apples and oranges here.
