Capturing 24p prob Cinema Tools / Final Cut Pro--PLEASE HELP!

Running into a bit of an issue that some of you may be able help with:

I have been capturing several tapes that were shot in 24p - I captured 29.97 then reversed the telecine in Cinema Tools to conform/relink 23.98 files. Everything was going smoothly - then - I stuck in my final tape / captured and when I tried to batch reverse telecine in Cinema tools (like I had previously done) - a different window popped up asking me what the files were captured as : "Field 1 Only, Field 2 only, F1-F2, F2-F1" Why is it asking for that option on this tape and not the others? Is it possible that the DP shot this tape on 24PA vs. 24P? I thought that this may be the case, but when I re-captured in FCP using 29.97 "remove 2332 pulldown" - my clip did not end up being 23.98 and I could still see the interlaced frames.....

Any ideas???? Your help is greatly appeciated.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

I am not quite sure I am clear on your question - if you shoot in 24p or 24PA you should ALWAYS orginally capture 29.97 (I know this seems a little counter-intuitive) and even I got confused until watching Noah's DVD. If you shoot 24PA then you capture 29.97 / and make sure you have "remove pulldown" checked. If you shoot 24P then you have to resolve you footage in cinematools.

One other note... when I shuffle through the tape frame by frame - it looks as though every frame is interlaced (i can see those small horizontal lines)... what is up?

here is a little more info - so, all of the other tapes I captured (shot 24p regular)/ I captured at 29.97 and then resolved the footage (batch reversed the telecine in Cinematools - when doing this Cinema Tools just asked what to conform the files to, i.e. 23.98) and this gave me 23.98 files - and they LOOK GREAT!!!

BUT.. on one tape (which I also assume was shoot on 24p regular- i am having this issue where the "interlacey" lines never seem to leave my footage. Each frame I go through i see the little lines. Completely different from my other footage. Also, when I tried to BATCH rev. telecine these files in CT (like I had with the other tapes) a new window prompt came up - asking me field order and such. This window DID NOT come when I did the exact same thing with the other files.

I am stumped. Where is Noah when you need him ;)

thanks!

Hi Mike-

Can you post 5 frames in a row from this tape? If you see interlaced frames on every frame- you may have shot 60i rather than 24p on that tape.

Noah

Never judge image quality in the Canvas window on your computer montior. NEVER! You have to use an external monitor. This is true for all NLEs.

In the post refered to that shows jaggies in the Canvas image, that can easily be fixed by enarging the Canvas window and setting it to show the image at 100%. Same for all NLEs.

Here are five continuous frames - like you suggest Noah, I am starting to wonder if the DP accidentally shot this tape in 60i, it look as though the lines only show up on my Cinema Display and this would make sense since it displays footage progressively right? - if so, how can I be sure AND how can change the 60i footage to edit in a 23.98 timeframe? I know that Natress has some plug-ins that will covert 60i footage to 23.98 - is this the right route/strategy? Your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated. If indeed this footage is 60i and not 24p or 24PA what would you suggest doing so that I can edit in my 23.98 project?

Thanks again!

1st, highlight the clip in the Browser, right click, go to Item Properties, Format. It'll tell you exactly what the clip is.

As is, just drop the Deinterlace filter (Filters > Video) on the clip, could be ok.

Thank Ben for the comment - I understand that I can see the item properties by right-clicking - and it says the clips are 29.97 naturally cause they were shot on DV. But this tells me what they were captured at .... not what mode they were shot at (24P, 24PA, 60i,)

See, I am working in a 23.98 timeline - capturing 24P footage at 29.97 fps and then resolving in Cinema tools (if it was 24pA I would not use CT and would just remove the pulldown through FCPcapture) - works great...everything working like a charm.

But this 1 tape...

After assuming it was shot at24P like the other tapes, I get a window prompt asking field order when Batch Reverse Telecining. This "field order" prompt did not happen on my other tapes (which is my first indicator that that is different with my final tape)- and when I proceed with the reverse telecining, something goofy happens and my final clip ends up being 1 frame.

Going through the footage it looks as though every frame is interlaced - so now I am starting to think that maybe it was shot at 60i and not 24P or 24PA - but I need to be sure.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Noah for your help/comments... forums like this remain an invaluable resource because of people like you! Also, I watched you DVD and LOVED IT!! Great resource and very much needed.

Thanks again,

Michael
