Two LaCie Drives Running at Once???

Does anyone know if it is harmful at any way to have two LaCie external drives connected and running simultaneously while editing in FCP (on a G5)?

I've sensed a little lag, but beyond that, is there greater chance of error or lost data or anything like that?

Also, there must be a way to have one FCP project on one Lacie drive, and a second on another, and not have to switch scratch disks each time I go back and forth between projects/drives and want to capture. I've tried doing this but it doesn't seem to work, and I always end up having to switch the capture scratch on the first line (rather than having multiple ones checked....not sure how this works) when i switch projects.

Thanks for any help available on this.

I use 2 or 3 at a time with no problems. I think the scratch disks have to be changed everytime you switch...By the way, they call it 'daisy chaining' when you use multiple hard drives connected to the system...

You might also want to look into RAID storage- that automatically links hard drives together in parallel for more storage and faster access.

I regularly have 3 FW drives connected to my system and don't have any issues. 1 pair of drives is daisy chained and the other drive just goes straight into my tower.

I did have a couple of Lacie's go bad...My Maxtor makes a weird noise when I turn it on first thing in the morning, like it needs to warm up, lol...

I've had 3 LaCie's running in FCP for about 3 years now. No problems at all - not daisychained. (But they are all backed up, of course!)

I KNOW you've got it backed up. One thing I've noticed lately is that when a lot of HD's fail, it has more often than not been the enclosure. Still, anything worth having is worth backing up.

so then....what can you recommend in place of a 500GB LaCie drive that is comparable in price but will be less problematic?
I've heard some good feedback on Western Digital...http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=242

It really doesn't matter how good a deal you get on something if it is a piece of ****. I spent $4400 to a data recovery service to recover the data from my worthless p.o.s. LaCie drive. I've heard horror stories from others, too. Here are some of them:

Had two. One died. The infamous "clicking sound". Switched to G-Raid and haven't looked back.

LaCie? Never again.
