Some of you may know and some of you may not know but this past week an 18 year old Bosnian immigrant living in Salt Lake randomly entered a mall in downtown Salt Lake City with a shotgun, a handgun, and a backpack of ammunition and began firing at anything moving. Well, just recently a tape was given to our local news which is actual footage of a man filming what happened inside the mall at the time. Six people (gunman included) died and four were hospitalized

The clip is (right now) on the news website but the downfall is that the news website is constantly changing video so by the time you see this the video may be deep within the archives.

During the occurance an off duty officer was having dinner with his wife for valentines day and luckily he was carrying his gun or else more would have likely died. In the video you will hear gunshots and see Salt Lake Police meet up with the off duty officer (they then split up) and then you'll hear a massive amount of gunfire (this is when the gunman was killed).

Anyway, here is the site, and it should be in the video bin on the right side somewhere.

Along with the story. When the 18 year old pulled into the mall parking lot he shot at two people from behind, a 16 year old and his father. His father was killed and the 16 year old had a bb get lodged in his ankle and his temple. The 16 year old was able to talk but doesn't know his father has been killed. He was taken to the hospital and sedated where he had brain surgery which dropped him from critical to serious condition. But here is the thing. The 16 year old is in fact a junior at my high school who sat next to me in my ceramics class. He and I only exchanged a few words throughout the semester but it is still weird and un-real to think about it.

Man that's really intense. Thoughts and prayers out to your schoolmate. That has to be so difficult to deal with.

The world is a crazy place anymore...

Wow, I am constantly blown away by the things we will do to each other as human beings, it's hard to realize how much hatred actually exists in this country. My prayers go out to the families involved.

It is an absolute tragedy. Amazing that there was an off-duty cop there who acted so quickly. Many more would've died if he wasn't there at the right time and place and the mall wasn't so close to SLC police precincts for rapid deployment. The mall was surrounded within 6 minutes, but the assailant had a shotgun, handgun and a backpack full of ammo. Frickin' 18 year old easily getting this stuff.

It's the worst shooting in Salt Lake City history.

We shot part of 'Unaccompanied Minors' there; I know the place well.

And, the public library building we used as a location for our 'airport terminal,' had a bomb go off a few months back.

Weird.

So I just heard from our old coordinator, that one of our Salt Lake City PAs from 'Unaccompanied Minors' lost one relative, and had a second wounded, in the shooting.

He's a stand-up young guy, and I think he will be okay with time, but I spoke with him a few minutes ago and he's sounding ragged. He says that people all over Utah, from the governor on down, have pitched in to help the victims' families however they can; there's people at his house right now doing useful things to try and make things a little bit easier on the survivors.

I don't know if my guys here (a lot of whom were on 'Minors') know yet...I guess I'll let them know when they get back into the office, so they can get in touch and offer their support.

Thank the Gods for off-duty cops; many more people could have had to suffer what our friend, and other families, are having to sufffer through right now.

This wounded person's last name wouldn't happen to be "Walker" would it? That is the kid from my school.

No, different people.

This afternoon I learned that some of the shooting took place right on the spot where we built our choir stands/Santa stage for 'Minors,' which was maybe inevitable because it's pretty much in the center of the indoor mall.

Gah.
