50min Live Capture into FC - Archival cuting into 4gig clips.

Ozduc, I looked at that option as well, but I still think that is a bit out of their price range. would be ideal for me, not haivng to load a billion disc, but 30bucks for 400gigs, compared to 250gigs for 80.00. They see that dont mind the more work. Not that in the future I will be doing all their work.

Thanks for the link I have never heard of that website.

SurJones, if you burn discs with Toast (well, you should, anyway), you can just feed toast a folder of any size and it will archive it to to a number of DVDs (this feature is referred to as "disc spanning"). Toast will handle it all, and just prompt you to insert a disc every once in a while.

Yeah I've used toast as well but I've never used that function for video files. That might be something to look into, Toast isn't that expensive and can save you some time. I'm not really sure how it would do with cutting up video files though but I would assume it would be fine.

Ullanta, Great I totally forgot about that. Who doesnt have Toast with Jam? :) Have you done this with video and able to reassemble in FC without any issues?

I've done it with large (30GB) audio sessions. I HAVE archived video this way but haven't yet had to de-archive any. You may want to test, but there's nothing that should prevent it from working.

testing right now. Tell you what I uncover. However, I am only doing this to help others, hoping someone might benefit from it. I am going to just limit my capture file size in the future, and I for my current footage I am just going to leave it on my harddrive. Its only 70gigs. This is great info.

Just in case, long ago when I first tried this I think I was stuck for a moment until realizing that the spanning in toast was only available for "Mac Only", not "Mac & PC" DVDs... I don't know if this remains the case today...

Your doing this for free?
No charge for your time and equipment?
And then they still would complain about paying for the backup?
So you invest even more of your time for doing the tedious work of single-discs backups?
Is this part of the "turn the other cheek" thing ;o)?
So why HD then?
Why not stream DV?
Great format if you don´t do much postwork with it, right?
Saves a lot of discspace too...
Or can the church afford HD TV sets? And if so, how do they play HD files?
All the best...

Wait a min, I NEVER complained at all. ( I think you misread in to what you quoted from me, and I also typoed it.(one or the other) I meant, They see the price difference, and like us all want to spend the least amount so we can keep investing. In the future they will have a full time staff media mintiry, so I wont need to spend the 4 hours a week volunteering, but I am sure I will. (I like helping) And that I dont mind the extra work. (If you read this and then re-read, and see my mistakes in forgetting to type a full word, it will make sense. (sorry I did not proof, I normally try to)

I volunteer my time, and equipment. I attened the church and It was my idea to start a Media Department. The church is helping with archiving the footage. Which is stated above. And is great that they are.

I shoot HD, cause I bought an HVX to do that, and there is maybe 60mins of Post Production time , and backing up to a Single or Dual Layer is not tedious. or time consuming. Expect maybe for my burner (but I highly think it needs to go hang out with its friends :) ) But anyways I shoot HD because the quality is great, when my church can afford HDTV's I tihnk we can stream from Apple TV (until HDDVD/BlueRay becomes less of a codec battle. We can have good footage for future. Many larger chruches have multi-million dollar Media Ministries. We are small but both the bigger and small churches media ministries have the same goal. Telling people that God Loves them. IF my church gets to that point they can save enough money to invest into their own equipment. That will be great.

Right now we are shooting HD, Taking the teaching and downconverting for Video Podcast. I have gotten 50min message down to 95mbs in a H.264 codec, with superb quality.

We are have compiling for Airtime which will be on local TV.

We will be putting together tons of videos to tie in with the pastors message(teaching), and it is fun to create those!!!!! Saturday I am going out to shoot the a CanFood donation at KingSoppers. Nothing wrong with community service (volunteering) When you have free time.

But anyways I was not complaining but trying to find the most economical archival for the future at 23gig clips files. BUT not that we know that we can limit capture file size, It will be easy to do in an 4gig or 8gig size, adn or until my chruch can afford a BlueRay + Discs. Anyone want to donate? :)

I was only wondering why THEY ( = your church) complained, of course you are doing this deliberately to help out where you can...
And I guess everything is fine for you with this situation, so I hope you´ll find a good solution for your technical problems...

Best,
Spart

Spart: The technical part of this has been solved. Which is nice, I have backed up almost 90gigs using Toast Titanium - After I get those clips (which I can just leave on the HDD, cause I have WAY enough room, but I figured- eh why not! - I have another 60gigs to back up, and it is good to go. This is really nice work flow. If I somehow shoot this longth of video in future. It takes 30seconds to open toast and and drag my files andload DVD. Then takes 5 sconds to take out and load another disk every 10mins for usually 5 discs.

My church is greatful for this volunteering I am doing, but small :) So right now, I know later in time the chruch will be able to. But they are picking up the tab on teh DVD's Whether DL or SL DVD's :) I dont care ethier way :)

Spartacus -

Hey, volunteering is volunteering, and there are lots of reasons for taking on projects for free, or even at your own expense! I won't try to posit SurJones' reasons, but even from a strictly business perspective sometimes just doing good work and getiing it out there, and developing good community relations, is essential. If you're not at the point where you have more paid work than you can handle, there's not much better you can do then still find a way to do work people will see. It develops your reel/resume, it can keep you fulfilled and in practice, and in many cases allows you to experiemnt in ways you wouldn't want to on a paid gig.

In fields where word-of-mouth is the way things are done, being seen working in some community center, and having your work distributed to people in a strong community is priceless.

Certainly in my case, a few well-chosen "loss leaders" have produced many, many paying clients.
