Hello all you sound experts

I’m looking for my next step up, and increase my arsenal of , and I’m looking at the AKG c480b modular system. I’d like to get a closer feel as to what I’m looking at. I just lucked out and purchased the ck69 double front half of the shotgun version on ebay for cheap money… last night! Now all I need is the mic body/ preamp and I got what a few considered to be a high-end shotgun. From what I’ve already spent, and from what I see from different web sights I’m going to have the complete shotgun for under $1k. Currently, I have the 4073a, two oktavas, and a wireless as my package. I’ve been thinking for some time now about a long gun, and it looks like this is it! I have two questions: 1. What are the strengths and weaknesses of this shotgun…can it really perform at 20 feet, like a stage mic? And 2. Buying the hyper cap…it’s a logical next step, correct?
I know some, on this board, like this mic, and I assume some will poo poo it! I would appreciate knowing the reason why?

Thanks Bruce

I have no experience with this mic. I really doubt you can get it very far away and I am sure that ANY mic is going to suck at 20'. I bet it would sound relly nice at 3'+ instead of 18" as is normal. I don't know though.

I am jealous. I was thinking about that mic also. I would definitely get the hyper cap if I were you. Oleg posted some good places to buy the ULS parts for cheap on my thread about hyper/super cardioid mics.

Yes...I posted on that thread, and hinted I was itching to make the leap! I saw the cap on Ebay...picture looked brand new, and your thread help motivate me to pull the trigger. Turns out I got it cheap...February is a slow month for businesses in general and I think that translates to Ebay as well!

20 feet in the desert :-), really i dont think you will beable to get something usiful from 7 meters overhead ,but it will preform well from 4-5 feet in hard conditions where you need pull out the voice ., sounds not bad at all
check with k-teck , they produce now extra long zeppelin for the 816 ( special made) dont know how good it works as it need extra support on the front since the k-teck suspensions are not made for so long microphones and you maybe you will need any other suspension to support the mic .
if it not work well you will need to find thesewhich work with 816 , used or new rycote /sennheiser
the boom you need to work need to be the best as the weight is hudge incl the fur and the mic start dance in fast passeges - forget the the vdb , even k-teck nis not the best if you need to open it full lenght.
.you will need exellent boom operator

.the short version is about the bsame as all others , good sound but i really not craizy about .

the hyper 63 - with 480 is one of the best i know , youn can find this combo shipped for les then 600 from europe buy swiwvwl joint as well if as the mic is abit long
look at the tappers forums you can find the 460 used for resonable price (privies model)

Yes tapperssection...I almost forgot about them...I definitely look there first! I'm glad to hear you chime in on the c 480 b with hyper...I'm thinking I made the right decision!

the C 480 series is the successor of the C 460 modular microphone series!

Oleg, when you say the short shotgun version is the same as all the rest...does that mean...no improvement over my 4073?
