Mini DV Deck Question

cheap mini dv deck?

cheap mini dv deck?

Hi, does anyone know the cheapest possible mini dv deck or camera that can capture footage shot on 24p with the Panasonic DVX100? (Using Final Cut Pro)

I've been using my DVX to capture, but don't want to keep wearing it out. I don't mean
to sound like I'm not serious about ediintg. It's just that I have rent and bills to pay and don't even have a thousand dollars to spend on a friggin' deck, let alone $1500-$2000. I just don't have that kind of money. Are there any alternatives?

I appreciate any input.

your logic is understandable saying that if someone can buy something for 3k they can then go and pay another 1600 for a another thing, but REALLY a lot of people almost cant even afford getting the camera and after spending 3k arent going to then spend even more money, especially on just 1 item.

In my case, I do have some money to spend, but id rather put $300 into a cheap camera which will give me the same results as a deck and then spend the other 1300+ on other stuff like a light kit, mic, and a matte box which will be more beneficial to me.

you dont need to have the best of the best equipment for everything you do. I think most people here worry way to much about getting the best of everything, but then they forget that what makes a film "good" doesnt have anything to do with how much money you can throw around, but how you can tell a story and how you present it.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to imply people who don't invest in a deck aren't "serious" about their craft, just that there's editing and there's shooting and it can come down to which is more of a priority. My priority as far as money is in the editing suite. You're right, capturing on a cheap camera mechanism has no direct impact on the quality of the footage whereas mics, lights, etc make or break the footage.

I just got my DVX so I can finally shoot for my DVD authoring business. I have no idea what lights, matte boxes, etc to even think about getting. I will pick this stuff up as I go I guess. My first camera investment has been a tripod which I'm eager to receive from the delivery guy.

Thanks. But are you sure any DV camera would work with 24p?

I've used this one by JVC at work.

It's under $800, but when it plays 24p tapes, the audio goes out of sync a little bit.

If you are using the original DVX100 you will have that issue with any camera that you use. FCP comes with a free plugin to to fix that audio sync issue with the original DVX.

Am wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Panasonic AG-DV2500 mini dv deck - can't seem to find any reviews of it. Price-wise, it's a bit less than the Sony DSR-11 that's been discussed - any comparisons, opinions, and/or experiece with the Panasonic? I get the deck vs. cheap camera in lieu of deck philosophy, don't need to re-visit that, just trying to make fully informed decision - my "non-DVX" "cheaper" (though not so cheap but heavily used) camera/deck stand in has just destroyed the last part of any of my work that I can risk - have no choice but to do something now.
Thanks for input.

I am awaiting my 100b and the Panasonic dv2500 deck, I'm hoping I made an ok decision on the deck. I went with it because it allows you to attach to 100b and direct record before you tape runs out in camera. Pretty cool if not in field.

I am having the same problem trying to capture footage shot on my DVX 100 in 24p on a small camcorder. The sound goes in and out, and even when I put the tape in the smaller camcorder just to watch the footage on my television I have the same issue. So, what plugin are you talking about if the issue is non-computer related? It has nothing to do with the editing bay, because the same thing happens by simply playing back the tape on the smaller camcorder.

Oh, and where can I get my DVX serviced in LA. I got the camera when it first came out and have had no maintenance done on it. I wonder if I need to do any maintenance on it any way?

Right now I have a trv 950 that i was planning on using to capture all the footage from my dvx but I've always used sony tapes in it which as I've learned use a wet lubricant. With that said I am planning on using the panasonic tapes in my dvx which I believe use a dry lube...will this cause any problems when Im capturing my footage like loss of quality or damage to my trusty old trv?
