George Lucas says something bad about ESB

So George thinks ESB is the worst of the original three? Well, I for one actually agree with him. Empire Strikes Back was tainted by a certain film-school feel (going into cave to battle your demons. You end up killing yourself? Give me a break). Not surprising that Irwin Kirshner was George's professor in what? Film school! Anyway, I know this is a lot of people's fav so I thought I'd post this.

Lucas is an idiot

ESB is arguably the best of the bunch. This thread is pointless other than to illustrate Lucas's lack of judgement

I think A New Hope is the best.

It was pretty daring to just immerse the audience in a world that they knew nothing about, just taking everything for granted, hoping that they would catch on to the Storm Troopers and the Rebels versus the Empire, and the entire storyline.

One of the best Part 1's of a trilogy.

Of course, there are other trilogies that have a best first installment:

Matrix and
Godfather (DON'T YOU SAY #TWO, Mr. Hudson!)
.... to name a few

Godfather II is better (HA, Mr. Hudson didn't say it) ;)

First off: Blasphemy!

Second off: Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?

Third off: How dare you!

Fourth off: Don't go there.

Fifth off: What the hell's the matter with you?!

Sixth off: No, you're wrong.

Actually, that's pretty much the opposite of "film school" style direction, so far as I can tell. I also don't know what you have against film schools; since the fall of the studio system, they've been pretty helpful in bringing a bunch of great directors into Hollywood. Ideally we'd have a studio system, or even low budget studios like Roger Corman's, which weren't so elitist and expensive, but I think there's a lot of value to be found in film schools. And I'm not lying when I say I desperately hope to be in one in a few years. Even more dangerously, I think there's a whole lot to be found in film theory!!! And I liked Robert McKee's book...a lot.

Taste is objective, and while I didn't like that scene much either for similar reasons to yours, I think Empire was by far the best. I do think Kirshner can't direct, though. (Robocop 2 anyone? Thought so...) Whatever, Lucas seems to be trying to get people to hate him. But I refuse. He produced Star Wars and all three Indiana Jones movies. I can't argue with that.

"A New Hope" is probably the unmanliest title for a super-mega-kickass film of all time. No wonder they went only with "Star Wars" the first go around.

I agree. ESB is the worst of the three originals. Return is my favorite. of the original... basdically cause I dig Yoda.

Empire had the better ending. Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett, it ends on such a down note, and that's what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had is a bunch of Muppets

So, did you see the films ?

YODA is predominatly featured in ESP not JEDI

Somebody's a Clerks fan.

The Ewoks should have been Wookies. And we should have seen some arm rippage.

esb is the better but if you look at it from a long distance they are all equally lame. but 3 is a darker story and much more character development than all the others but finding out vader is the father now is pointless to this generation because though who watch the first trilogy now already know that so "luke I am you father" can make the audience say "big deal".

This is why at my house we call the prequel trilogy "Those Films of Which We Do Not Speak." My kids are young, I can protect them so that Empire still means something.
