The DVXuser Correct Grammer Thread - Kelsey or English !

Then we get into the whole there vs. their vs. they're mess. That's another one that bugs the crap out of me.

Also then vs. than.

One thing I never understood is the difference between affect and effect. I'm usually able to figure out which one to use simply by how the sentence sounds, but I never really figured out the actual rule behind it.

To affect something is to have some influence over it or to cause some change within it.
To effect is to actually cause an event to occur or bring something into being.

The new information affected his decision.
He decided to effect a new policy for the company.

Yeah I've heard that drinking can impair the proper use of grammar and punctuation. :)
Although I'm not sure I'd assume someone was drunk if he couldn't tell me the difference between affect and effect.
Might have been a good sobriety test in Victorian London, though. Hmmmmm.....

I think this has got too be the most common blunder when it comes two the written word. If I had a nickel or to for every time someone -on this board alone- misused

to
two
too

I'd be a rich man.

You mean that not every word that ends in an "s" needs one?:)

If ONLY it ended there.

Nowadays, people stick an apostrophe anywhere they feel like it.

I've seen:

"wan't" -- "I wan't to tell you something . . . "

"understan'd"

And worse.

C'mon...what could possibly be worse (than) "I wan't to understan'd"?

I just wanted to say that the English language drives me crazy. For example:

Enough: gh = f

Weight: eight = ate

So how come I can't spell Fate = Gheight

Speaking of Weight. The whole I before E is crap... I before E except after C and sometimes W and occasionally H (Height).

I agree spell check has made me a terrible speller, I didn't exactly fight it though either.

You know what really bugged me when I was a kid... is how Dictionary was so hard to spell.

Aargh! ... okay now that I vented I feel better:cheesy: .

And how many times to you see someone write through when they mean throw? And one for Haakon...loose for lose...?

Our when they write to when they meant do

Actually I think I've written throw when I meant through a few times, I'll usually fix it before any one sees it but sometimes not.
