Belief is spelled weird.
Actually, belief is spelled the way you would expect using the correct i-e spelling convention. It's weird that's spelled weird.

I've never heard anyone say suspension of belief. It seems to be used correctly where I've heard people attempt the phrase.

However...

Supposably
Orientate
Irregardless

are all "words" I could go a long time without hearing.

You're right! A vast portion of your audience will come to your story as skeptics. It is up to you as a storyteller to create characters and scenarios which defeat their natural propensity to resist concepts that come into conflict with their internal "fourth wall". Great storytellers can do this even when the world they're presenting is entirely implausible!

And when you look at almost any word for too long, it will wreak havoc on your brain. Oh man. I just started looking at "brain". Uh-oh. What about "weighted"... that's not good either! *&$%^, there's either now!

Oh... must concentrate on something else...

Trying to find an example.

But I've seen people say it in person.

case and point.

LOL!!!!

It's "case IN point."

Guess that serves you right for picking on the poor guy about his misuse of a phrase.

Ha ha ha...oh man....The irony....

Thank you Blaine! It makes me want to throttle the speaker and shove a copy of Strunk & White down his throat.

This is petty, but I completely shut down when someone says "supposably".

Also, when someone throws in an "ironically" when there is no irony in their statement, that drives me crazy as well. If I'm ever acting boorish at a cocktail party (a regular occurence, I assure you), you now know how to be rid of me.

as it has been said, Irregardless is the one that gets me the most. People sometimes break this one out to somehow sound intelligent and it kills me. I once had a CEO I worked for use this in a meeting and how do you correct the guy?

Fo my friends in NY, "Time Square"

Regardless of your feelings, that's one way new words come into being.

Irregardless will probably become legitimate sooner or later.

Probaly probably won't.

Correcting someone...is probably better than walking away thinking them an idiot forever after.

On forums? Was it just a typo, or do they just not know how to spell the word? I fat-finger things all the time, a regular occurance, and usually catch it before I hit the Post button. But not always.

I blame the spell checking programs, its made us humans lazy...

Let us define belief as “A” or the acceptance of “A”, thus dis-belief would become -”A” or negated “A”.

So in that sense if all parties agreed that “A” happens to be the axiom of generally accepted state of reality then when an audience watches a fictitious work of cinema then it can correctly be labeled as “Suspension of Dis-belief”

However complications can arise due to the relative nature of the world belief, say for example that person P1 believes in “A”

Thus:

P1 = A

Belief for P1 is A, disbelief is -A, I.e.

P1(b) = A……………..(1a)
P1(db) = -A……………(2a)

Now suppose that another person P2 believes that:

P2 = -A

Thus:

P2(b) = -A……………..(1b)
P2(db) = A……………(2b)

But we have now created a inequality from (1a) and (1b) as with (2a) and (2b), thus in order to restore the equation, we can say that for person P1 “Suspension of Disbelief” BUT for P2 we have to say “Suspension of Belief” I.e.

P1(ds) = -A = P2(b) = -A = 0

(where 0 = suspension)

Conclusion: The phrase is technically incorrect as it assumes that all parties have mutually accepted the same set of beliefs, however generally speaking in everyday laymen’s terms it is correct since Generally we can safely assume that most people accept the same set of basic foundations of reality.

Ok, sorry for the brain exercise don’t blame me, blame -Zach- he started it :)
