don't quite understand HD consumer cameras

What makes an HD camera like the HVX better than a consumer HD cameara? From what I understand, the resolution is the same, but the 3 chip vs. 1 chip means that the HVX is capable of better color? Is that what gives it a better image?

And as these new consumer HD cameras come out, will they have an option to switch to 24p? I don't know much about cameras but this would seem like a really easy thing to put in a camera and something that all these youtube savvy short-filmmaking generationers would actually want.

The Youtube generation doesn't need HD to post low res ultra compressed footage of their cat karaokeing to George Michael.

Control. You cant Control most consumer cameras to teh degree yo ucan controll a Pro camera.

the HC1 for example, yea its 1080i, but its not controlable to the extent that a XHa1 or HVX200 can be. you can adjust color, master pedestal, custome white balance, Manual Zoom/Iris/ Focus.... The list goes on. Then theres the Audio. Pro cameras gve you better sound recording, and professional standard balanced connectors.

there is a reason they are more expensive.

A camcorder from a system level is made up of more than just its frame size:

(A) Lens
(B) Image Sensor
(C) DSP
(C1) Controls/both softare and harware, some
(D) Recording Format.

So comparing one camera to another is not easy. With so many variables, just because a consumer camera now records in the same frame size as a pro camera, that does not mean that somehow its going to produce the same kind of images.

That said consumer cameras have come a long way. Now the next struggle is the 1/3" Chip Vs pro 2/3" (but I doubt they will be making 2/3" consumer chips anytime soon)
