deleting excess clips from bin

I am trying to clean up my bins, and what I have is a bunch of captures that were either tests or had some technical problems that were later corrected (audio sync and such). Can I/How do I delete these captured clips without effecting the main captures? I want to do this for 2 reasons: a). the mess annoys me, and b). I feel like these clips are taking up valuable disk space (am I right about this, or are these smaller clips just adjuncts of the larger captured clip and don't take up any additional space?)

thanks, everybody

Are they being used in your project?

If not, just click on it in the bin and hit delete. Then you'll have to go to your "capture scratch" folder and delete them from there in order to completely remove them from your hard drive.

hey, brown

this is where I'm a little confused. the clips that I want to dump have problems with them and have been re-imported. they are from the same source material, but differ in length. Will deleting these clips effect the similar ones that I want to keep in the bin?

If you have re-captured the clips and they are different capture scratch files then the older, messed up ones can be deleted without affecting the newer ones. Now if you are just re-importing the clips from the capture scratch files (meaning both clips in your FCP bin are pointing to the same capture scratch file) then don't delete the capture scratch file, just delete the messed up file in your bin in FCP.

Re-imported, or re-captured? that's the key, here.

If you had to recapture the footage from a tape, then the old's can be thrown away. If it's from the same captured tape, just different in/out points, than you'll need to keep the original clip in your "capture" folder, but you can still delete the sequence's and clips from the bins.

Get it??

I had to recapture. guess I can delete the unwanted clips. do they have to be deleted from both the capture folder and bins or just the capture folder?
thanks

If you RIGHT-Click or CONTROL-Click on the clip you'll get a drop down menu. Choose MAKE OFFLINE and you have three choices...leave on disk, move to trash, delete from disk. CHoose what you want.

Now, if it is just sections from a clip that you want to TRIM, and not full clips, then you need to use the Media Manager. Read up on it in the Manual...it explains it all.

I trashed a lot of stuff that wasn't in use in the scratch folder, but I accidently trashed (and emptied) three clips that I needed. Now they're offline in FCP. I'm in the process of re-importing the footage, but the edited clips in the timeline are still reading as offline. Will they automatically re-connect when I recapture, or do I have to recapture and re-edit the footage?
thanks

p.s. is there a way to recover the items in the trash after they've been emptied?

Just recapture and then reconnect media. You shouldn't have to re-edit.

After Trash is empty, there are a few utilities that can go find stuff. Problem is, some of those sectors on the drive may or may not have been re-used. It's a coin toss, and normally you lose.
