opinions on use of opening credits

Hi,

I am wondering what people think of films with opening credit sequences as opposed to films that begin with the first scene [and maybe a title card.]

What is your opinion on pacing, function, etc.?

Thanks,

Ken

If it's a short film, just open with title of film and get INTO the story. If it's a full feature, open credits, or do what "Yentl" did, just insert the title and get TO the story. Really, though, with short films, get it over with quick, you don't have any time to waste.

That's just my opinion.

im not a fan of title sequences that dont advance the story. It really really depends though

if you do them make them interesting watch some movies to see what interesting and cool.

I like credits that are mixed in over the beginning of the story. I can't remember all of the examples, but one involved a newspaper print press that had the names of different crew/cast members and was picked up and used by people in the film. That sort of thing normally comes off as clever and unobstrusive, yet still satisfies all the folks who want their name at the beginning of the film.

those are the ones im not a fan of, seems real cheesy to me. Like Broken. Ultra cheese.

I like the old-style titles. Everything up front. Sorry.

But that might just be because I'm tired of the newer ways.

Really? I don't dig that too much... though Casino Royale's credits freakin rocked!

HAven't seen it.

I'm talking old, old style..with everything up front. Right down to the recording by Western Electric, and the IATSE and MPPAA logos at the bottom. :)

One of the best title sequence that I've seen and inspired by was David Fincher's Se7en. It's great lookin' and devotes to the story of the film.

Saul Bass did amazing title sequences - and they also reflected the movie in a very natural way, though that seems to be somewhat of a lost art. But still, amazing.

casino royale's opening credits were so damn cool, totally agree. I think its definately justified in any film, as long as it is done in a creative way that lends to the film and as long as they don't drag on and aren't plain boring. One of my favourite opening title sequences is from the french film Delicatessen, anyone else seen it?

I like a good credit sequence, but I loved Raising Arizona's credits that showed up fifteen minutes into the movie. By the time they come around you're invested heavily in the film and hence cheering the credits on.

I hate credit sequences that repeats the same name over and over (i.e John Smith Production Presents a John Smith Film, Directed by John Smith). Jeez, I think we can pretty much figure out that this film was by John Smith!
