I fogot to add Top Gun to the list. Granted, it's behind Fletch, but come on...

"Your head is writing checks your body can't cash..."

Wave of light, I loved your top three. I completely forgot about Brazil. Definately one of the greatest movies ever for a cult audience.

Ullanta, you're right. All That jazz was releaes in 1979... DAMN!
Oh well. Then I'm going to have to say that Deadringers was my favorite movies of the 80's. Definately on of Cronenbergs finest moment.

yeah i completely disagree with that post. I believe the mid 70's all the way to the EXTREMELY EARLY 90's was a good time for cinema, and the 80's was the peak of it all. After that, films went to hell and it wasnt about storytelling...it was about who can make the biggest explosion.

let's nto forget Cronenbergs Videodrome. that is a spectacular movie! incredibly well done and amazingly intelligent. The fly was great aswell.

impossible to pick one...

my favorite indie film from the 1980's is probably Stranger than Paradise.
my favorite foreign film is probably The Sacrifice.
my favorite drama is probably Raging Bull.
my favorite comedy is likely to be Raising Arizona.
my favorite adventure movie would be Raiders of the Lost Ark.
my favorite action movie would be Die Hard.
my favorite musical... Pink Floyd The Wall.
my favorite horror movie would be Evil Dead 2
my favorite sci-fi would be The Thing.
my favorite movie that first showed me naked boobies... Stripes.
and my favorite guilty-plreasure piece of crap... Extreme Prejudice

wow. zak forsman, that was very thorough. respect to evil dead 2. i have been wanting to watch stranger than paradise for a while. cheers

Zak, just out of curiosity, did you retype "my favorite" or did you cut 'n' paste?

Anyway, Stranger Than Paradise is a good call - Screamin Jay Hawkins is indeed the best!

Odd; I tend to consider 1982 to be cinema's greatest year.

Just my opinion but the 80's was a huge cinematic sliiiiiide from the rebirth of the 70's. Each year getting worse then the previous. There were certainly a lot of good films made in the 80's but the ratio of good to bad and the depths of how bad the bad got was pretty extreme.

To put it another way: make a list of the worse movies of all time (that received a major national release) and I bet you will find most of them in the 80's; more in the later 80's and early 90's but centered around that time none-the-less. Way too much cocaine and hubris running around a 100% Hollywood centered film industry during that time.

Let us not forget, even though it was released in 1990, the 80's brought us Godfather 3. 'nough said. :)

While there were a lot of good movies in the 80's - let's not forget that it was the same decade that gave us many, many, many, bad, bad movies

I wouldn't be surprised if given another 20 years we look back on this decade as being a great decade in movies.
I have a feeling that given enough time, we'll forget all about "White Chicks" and the like...and only remember LOTR and others.

Disagree

I find every decade to offer us the same amount of good and bad
