best film ever?

i dont know... yes it was like an achievement...but really, something about that movie made me dislike it... i havent seen it in 4 years so ill probably need to take another look at it.

im very surprised. three chevy chase movies and two harrison ford movies have been mentioned. any other harrison ford movie or chevy chase movies from the 80's someone really liked? jsut to see whether these two were really huge icons in their time.

Cool... I've always wanted to see it... movie rental stores closed now... maybe tomorrow.. JH did you see the reply to that OTHER thread?

Haven't seen Blade Runner yet... heard it was really good.

I've seen it. In fact...
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shores of Orion...

has anyone seen All That Jazz?

Yes! It's certainly one of the best best movies of all time, not just the 80's (or, was that the late 70's?)

Anyway, movies from the eighties that had a lasting impression, in no particular order...

Blue Velvet
Sex, lies, and videotape
Dangerous Liaisons
Do the Right Thing
Into the Night
Terminator
Top Secret
Zelig
Spinal tap
War Games
Rain Man
Popeye
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Reds
The Killing Fields
Places in the Heart
They Call Me Bruce
The Wall
Twins

Good calls. Blade Runner and Raiders go without saying. Nice call on All That Jazz.

Generally the 1980s was such a horrible time for American cinema; the birthplace of the mindless summer blockbuster, endless sequels, teen focused comedies, and Schwarzenegger's career.

Noteworthy exceptions not yet mentioned:

Empire Strikes Back
A Christmas Story
Road Warrior
The Princess Bride
Brazil
The Thing
Raising Arizona
The Shining
Full Metal Jacket
The Untouchables
Evil Dead 2
Gandhi
Wall Street
Plattoon

I am putting out a pre-veto on anyone who says Scarface :) (great movie but sooo overrated in my book)

Brandon, I would suggest renting the Director's Cut of Blade Runner first but definately watch the original too. Better yet, since you have already waited 25 years to see it, wait! They are doing a theatrical release of "Blade Runner: The Final Cut" this year. And Blade Runner is one of those films that really needs to be experienced on the big screen to be fully appreciated.

Cheers

How can any of those films be called "best", if they don't have the Pre-Fab Four dancing on Victor Mature's head?
