funny thing was i always said, lets solve poverty first... then Global warming. cause the guy who heats his house by burning newspapers and furniture, cant afford a hybrid car ya know?
You know - I hate to say this, but the cynic in my can't help but think....
if we were to do everything he outlined, then what exactly are we going to do with the overpopulation issue?
The planet can sustain over population. we just have to be careful and put forth measures, politically enforced, to just curb the population growth. A linear growth in stead of Exponential.
China has had alot of sucess in curbing its poulation explosion. Monetary incentives for having 1 child, penalties for more than 2...... Theoretically is everyone had 2 children, the world poulation would remain constant. ( if everyone survived to reach reproductive age) but liek everythign else, it takes political will. And that is something we DONOT have.
Interesting and really makes you think. I don't completely agree with him, but he does bring about many good points.
I suppose it's because I'm not someone affected by HIV, or poverty, and yes HIV, poverty, famine, should all be at the top of the list, but I don't think climate change should be all the way at the bottom. (I'm sure some will dissagree with this)
The problem with climate change is that we can see it coming, but people don't take notice to how it will really effect us in the long run. People are ignoring it, or don't realize what it's actually doing to the planet. The information people are discovering on a daily basis of the carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere. Watching a movie like "An Inconvenient Truth" really shines the light on this. We're already starting to see the effects. Lake Beds drying up, record breaking summers, glaciers melting (and the water that will rise), tornadoes, hurricanes, the ocean dying (because 25% of the carbon emmisions are absobed by the ocean), so on and so on.
Yes, it will cost a lot to do a bit of change for the climate... but instead of bumping climate change to the bottom of the list, we should be finding ways to put it up in that list. Cheaper ways to solve the problem.
He does have priorities in the right place, but I think about it like trying to cure a disease. Climate change is like a disease, and the planet, our bodies. Now I'm slowly dying because of climate change. They say they have a temporary cure, or a step in the right direction, but it'll cost everything I have. Well then I'd give them everything I have. The fact that I'm bankrupt is something that I can overcome, wheras the fact that I'm dead... is not.
Yes it will hurt the economy. But is the economy really an issue when it comes to losing our home? Our planet? The place we live? It may in the long run even affect our food, our disasters, etc...
Now I'm no leading expert in climat change. I only know what I saw in an inconvenient truth, and in the additional info on the dvd (which explains why the ocean is being slowly poisoned). But I suppose it all depends on how climate change will really end up affecting the planet in the long run.
But then again, it's politicians, and to them money is everything, and therefore we do have to prioritize and put climate change at the absolute bottom. *sigh*
As a gentle reminder, politics is one of the taboo subjects for DVXUser. There are plenty of other forums to discuss politics and solving the world's problems. Thanks for your cooperation.
