Importing HVX200 16:9 TAPE Footage without having to render

Hello,

I have been playing in FCP setings and have been unable to get this right. I have footage on a mini-dv tape, shot on the HVX200's native 16:9 (squeeze) in 24PA. What capture and sequence settings should be used to import the 16:9 footage so FCP dos not have to render the footage? I do not need to edit on a 24fps timeline.

Thanks,

Standard NTSC DV Anamorphic Easy Setup would do the job if you're ok with leaving it 29.97. Rendering always means your sequence settings don't match your clips.

Hi,

I think I'm having some similar problems and this is my first time editing HD footage.

The video was shot on an HVX with 720/24p setting and when editing in a DVCPRO easy setup for that footage the footage gets squeezed to what seems abnormal. When I select "anamorphic" for the sequence, it seems to squeeze it even further.

Can someone verify what settings I might need if not those, or is this squeeze natural?

thanks

That squeeze is normal. That is what is called ANAMORPHIC. It should be squeezed vertically...stretched taller, and not horizontally.

If you are editing with FCP, all you need to do is use the DVCPRO HD 720p24 Easy Setup and all the settings will be set for you.

I figured out what my problem was - I do know that the size of the screen is squeezed to 16:9 vs. 4:3 but the squeeze that I had was abnormal. It turns out that when I imported my P2 footage there was a checkbox - "Remove duplicate/adv. pull-down frames" - which was checked. When I unchecked it and re-imported my footage it was still 16:9 but the actors looked normal, not smushed into a frame.

To the experienced people, does that sound right?

I changed my timeline settings and import settings to anamorphic, but I still have to render all the footage I import. Obviously, I have some mixmatch between imported footage and timeline settings. Maybe it is not the anamorphic, but the 29.97 vs. 24.
With footage shot on tape at 24PA on an HVX, should I use the import setting for pulldown removal edited to import anamorphic, or should I use the anamorphic preset in FCP?

A simple mistake and easy fix

A simple mistake and easy fix

I did not open a new sequence after changing my settings and thus the sequence never changed. After closing and opening a new sequence, everything was fine.

Thanks for the help!
