SUNSHINE: Danny Boyle's New Flick

from what rember some of the character go through sun radition and the effects it does to them like mentally. science says sun radiation would do something to people.

the tailor looks pretty good... reminds me of a film called "solar crises" that i thought had some amzing sp-fx but everyone hated... a bit like a reverse story to this one..

isnt that the guy who plays human torch in F4 ??? he should be able to fix it!

Well, the premise is as stupid as the core of the Earth stopping its spin.

But that's not the issue. You accept the premise of the movie and go from there.

If they're going to "reignite the sun," the trip would take several years -- and there have to be obstacles along the way, or there's not much of a movie. Obviously there ARE obstacles, judging from the shots of the film, but what are those obstacles going to be? Nothing that would actually happen in the real world.

In any case, this is probably belabored further than it should have been. I think it'll be crap. I also think the new Diana Ross album will be crap. I think I'm right on both. But if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong. No biggie.

Dude. It's a movie. It's entertainment.

Jesus.

I don't know anything about the spinning of the earth (I highly doubt it can just slow down) and I didn't see "the core", but the idea of the sun going out, well we all know stars go out eventually.

The fact that the sun is going out isn't far out there. We know it's going to come to an end. Just it's much furthur than 50 years from now. Try billions of year. But if they jumped to billions of years from know, we could argue that we've already colonised another planet and saved ourselves from this problem.

They stretched the truth... sure... but it's the movies.

I wouldn't say it's total crap because it's a similar idea as the Core. I never heard of the earth being able to stop spinning. But I have heard of starts dying.

Perhaps it's not actually "re-igniting" the sun, but perhaps they found a way to keep it from going super-nova and keeping it burning.

It's just a trailer. I wouldn't be so quick to judge... but that's just me.

Trailer looks cool though.

EDIT: Just read up on it. When the sun dies out, it will turn red, enlarge, and basically incinerate everything on the planet. Perhaps they are just saying "re-igniting the sun" because they don't want to go into the science of it all in the trailer... I hope

I love Danny Boyle. However, I did not like Millions too much. It was well filmed the part about he Angels, but that was it. This new movie does look awesome however. Good ol' danny-boy...

I'll watch it simply because it looks great. This is going down the path of SOLARIS for me. I dont care if Cillian was in it or not. It does however seem to have an odd combination of cast.

Sunshine was an excellent film. Thorough emotional engagement. However... the ending went the way of the cliche.

Just saw it opening day. Danny Boyle was also in NY for Q&A in the appropriate Sunshine Theater. Was a great film in my opinion. Whether the believability was far fetched or not, the way the story and characters were carried felt authentic and made me care about them. The fact is, if the premise was too believable, it wouldn't be interesting at all. Sure let's say it was a movie about a billion years from now... the star is finally dying... perhaps we are interstellar beings by then... trying to stop the sun from burning out.. but why? who cares? Regular space travel by then would be a thing of the past. And a dying star shouldn't even be an issue.

Reviews seem to be mixed, but I enjoyed it. It's well-paced sci-fi and it isn't a spectacle, popcorn flick.

I really, really want to see this movie but it's not playing (wide) in chicago; yet the ad's say it opened on the 20th.

I suppose all the big moviehouses saved their space for Potter, Prime, and Homer.

Just saw the film. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Great movie. My favorite of the year so far. Great movie, great acting, story, directing, editing, everything. Cillian Murphy is one of my favorite actors, and even the Human Torch from Fantastic 4 did a good job in this. Danny Boyle is a great director, and him and Alex Garland make a great team. They can do no wrong in my book.

Find somewhere playing this movie.

The first 2/3 of the movie is great. The final act is laughable at best, but still has a couple of good moments.

The film is not a hard scifi flick, it really dropped the ball. Boyle talks about this film as if it Tarkovsky's Solyaris, but when you actually go see it, the stuff he talks about is barely there.

It is sad that I am saying this, as I had high expectations and really wanted to love it, but the ending and the introduction of a 'new element' is completely unneeded and throws out everything that was established earlier in the film.

It ENDS up being a Event Horizon slasher flick.

i have to agree with jpeck. Wow, i couldn't believe my eyes at about 65% of the way in. It WAS a great movie then just fell apart. (or should i say blew apart) It has a really great beginning and its worth the 11 buck for that.

SUNSHINE IS AWESOME. It's a thinking person's movie in some ways...but on the other hand, I was sort of terrified from start to finish, so it's also a horror and Saw fans should get a lot out of it too. Sort of Lynch meets Saw meets Kubrick. Not to be missed, and because it's so cinematically interesting, DON"T wait for it on DVD. See it big.

It really fails as a 'thinking' movie as well. Most of its 'depth' comes from interviews from Boyle, which really is not found within the movie.

I really don't know what went wrong with the script and the ideas in Garland and Boyles heads. They committed to a type of movie and in the end we had a different kind. With a run time of 108 minutes, there really was no time to explore anything completely or not enough to give us some sort of cryptic message to decipher after the film was done.

///////////////////////SPOILERS\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

There was really nothing to do with God in the movie, unless you read a little too much into it -- via Danny boys interviews.

What happened to the people go crazy in space plot? It was thrown out for a Sam Neill Event Horizon super being. Yes I am sure that Pinbacker went nuts, but why? how? when? Where is all (not so much) of this mention of God coming from? What happened to the feeling of isolation? Why wasn't the thought of not being able to return home explored more? What happened to the fascination with the sun?

I would have preferred if they kept the insanity in the original cast. I would have loved to see the psychiatrist of the Icarus II take on that role, as he would have been the 'Pinbacker' of the second ship.

Pinbacker seemed to be a plot device that would allow them to kill off everyone but Capa (Cillian Murphy).

We rarely get to see scientists acting like scientists in films. For me, I loved the death of the captain, Michelle Yeoh's love for the ships plants and the psychiatrists soon to be obsession with the feeling of being consumed by the sun's rays. As well as how everyone was in awe of Mercury. While the mission continued, especially with their set backs, they would revert from their trained scientist astronaut states back in humans. But we really didn't see any progression at all.

Beautiful. In my opinion one of the most beautifully shot films in the history of cinema. Alwin Kuchler is one of the most amazing cinematographers of our age, in my mind.
