I'm with ya' Kholi.... War of the Worlds never lets up... You barely have a chance to catch your breath.

I think that's called..... Suspense?

As far as I know, that's what it's called. It's kinda like when I choked on that spoon the other day while eating Strawberry shortcake. I was on the edge of my seat, and then the floor. It was very suspenseful.

If Spielberg had never done a movie other than Schindler's List...that alone would have put him in with the greatest directors that had ever lived.

Film was created for Spielberg, and Spielberg was destined to be the essential filmmaker. He is the cinematic messiah (if he will forgive me the gentile reference.) We should be forever grateful to him, the lot of us, for sharing his boundless imagination with us...and for exponentially expanding our own individual imaginations in the process.

Why am I responding to this unimaginable blasphemous horseshi* any way. This thread is on the bottom-rung level of some mamaluk screaming "fire" in a crowded
theatre.

Spielberg is not a hack, but he's not a god either. He makes blockbusters, pure and simple. He makes films that make money and doesn't try to pretend he's anything else.

I enjoy Spielberg, his movies are entertaining.

Spielberg is obviously not a hack, and the accusation(s) are eye rolling. But whenever he is referred to as a deity in these forums, I roll my eyes in the same manner.

Spielberg is a god among filmmakers

Jaws
CE3K
Raiders of the Lost Ark
E.T.
The Color Purple
Empire of the Sun
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
Munich

Come on ladies.

I think the poster is also perhaps mixing up the script with its implementation (ie the directors job)....

It's one thing to dislike a script but I wouldn't put that blame on the director!

I used to hop on the Spielberg-bashing train. Then one day I asked myself, "do I really dislike Spielberg's movies?" And the answer was "no". It's true that he has been given the keys to the kingdom and who wouldn't be great if they were handed those keys? Yet almost everyone else who gets a hold of these keys finds a way to lose them (*ahem, M. Night, Joel Schumacher, Renny Harlin, John McTiernnan*). Yet Spielberg stays around.

If you're judging Spielberg in comparison to the art-director crowd, then you're comparing apples to oranges. Who knows if he could compete with those guys? He doesn't try. If you're judging him in comparison to all the other big budget event directors... he is the best.

There are times when he looks like a hack, I'll admit (Always, 1942, parts of A.I., etc). But part of being great means taking chances. And you're not always going to choose the right thing. You have to be wrong SOME of the time. With Spielberg, he's been right more often than wrong.

Munich was his latest "serious" film and I think in many ways it was a misfire brought on by a ridiculously fast schedule. I'd like to see him take on a serious subject with some time and thought. It's not his M.O. these days. But you get the feeling that he's not as passionate about things as he used to be. And maybe that's lessened the quality of his films.

That's my take.

With Steven's clout, he might as well be the one writing the scripts since he can pick and choose anything he wants, so if the script is bad, yes you can blame him.
