Reading through various threads lately, like the thread on Tarantino and the one on Night M. Shyamalan, I see Spielberg mentioned as if he is the bar to measure films with. And those two threads are not the only ones. Everytime there is a list or comparison tons of people put him right up there with the best of the best, or simply just THE best.
Now explain yourselves. What has he ever brought to filmmaking?
He is nothing but a hack, an average filmmaker, entertaining the masses with the lowest form of denominator. He is pure commerce, no essence or soul. What does he represent? His body of work is not the least cohesive. Except sucking up to minority groups at certain point, what is he but political correct, mainstream?
Look at his films:
Indiana Jones series -- okay original adventure, though somewhat flat and stale by now, and nothing but entertain in its purest form, devoid of meaning.
Munich -- political correct mumbo jumbo...
War of the Worlds -- awful awful film, like fast food, you feel hungry the minute you finish, poorly done remake, no suspense, just special effects that look computerlike...
The Terminal -- didn't watch it as the trailer WAS the film
Catch me if you can -- okay fun. Fun! That's all.
Minority Report -- sci fi nonsense... plastique, unreal, no depth in characters, the Cruise freak at his worst...
AI -- would have been great 20 years ago. No new light is shed on the subject. It brings nothing to the world. Blah!
Saving Private Ryan -- should have been called Saving Private Violin, only grace is that it brought realism to the (actual) war scenes, landing in Normandy top notch, but how he got from gritty realism to Tom Hanks goofy face and all the violins is beyond me... That IS a feat, though a negative one..
Amistad -- pseudo historic film, that feels as historic as Scorsese's The Gangs of New York...
Jurassic Park -- children's film, nothing wrong in that, but it is pure disneyland...
Schindler's List -- one of the biggest and most shameless acts of exploitation in the history of film making. It is so fake it makes Pamela Anderson's b*****s seem real. There are many better and more decent films about the holocaust out there. He just got the fame due to his name.
Hook -- need I mention it??
This leads me back to 1975 - 1987 where he made some decent flicks:
Empire of the Sun (1987) -- honorable mention, not bad
The Color Purple -- playing too much on the emotional side of things, but hey, okay original (due to the book I am sure)...
E.T. -- Original childrens movie ... I will give him that one
Close Encounters of the Third Kind -- okay sci fi
Jaws -- classic horror. Top notch.
---
This leads me to conclude... Spielberg original? Hardly. I mean he is no Leonardo da Vinci like some suggested. He is not on the top 10 or even 20 or even top 100 of the best film directors.
Bergman, Woody Allen, Wong Kar-Wai, Wim Wenders, Peter Greenaway, Dreyer, Eisenstein, Kubrick, Tarantino, Akira Kurosawa, Jim Jarmusch, Romero, Takeshi Kitano, Hitchcock, Linklater, Haneke, Soderbergh (sometimes) and others are true originals....
Spielberg is just a mainstream hack ..... He is revered simply because he is there, this big mastodont blocking the view of the sun, like the Eiffel Tower, people know his name... He exist.... but it takes more than size to be good. He is no artist. He never explored the film medium. He is THE most overrated man in the film business...
