Switching from FCE to FCP midway?

Hi ,

I filmed a feature with DVX100A (not HD). If I edit it on FCE and halfway through upgrade to Final Cut Studio 5.1 will the final film suffer any quality loss? Will the two programs (FCE & FCS) blend ok? Thanks for your answers!

As long as you use the same codec/settings for digitizing, there shouldn't be any quality loss seen by switching between applications. The loss you might see is in say bin organizations and such. I imagine you can probably take an XML or such out of FCE to get your cuts and what not into FCP 5.1, but not sure if anything else will take for you. I've never used FCE, and certainly not done the mid-stream upgrade, so not sure what quirks there might be. But for the most part I think you'll be okay, just might need to spend some time re-organizing and sorting out certain things. Good luck.

cheers.

The golden rule is not to change versions in the middle of a project, let alone applications.

Not that I care to follow rules. I take pride in doing the wrong thing when it comes to most things.

On the other hand I've never gone from FCE to FCP, just FCPversion x to FCP version x. This could be an issue. Sorry I don't have anything concrete to contribute.

What's the worse that can happen? You might have to keep editing on FCE. No big.
