cant deinterlace on Vegas

Hello all, I have a DVX100A cam and use Sony Vegas to capture and edit. Ive tried everything in the properties section. Ive tried to blend the fields, interpolate the fields, i left it on none, nothing is working! I shot my footage on 24P mode and in the properties section i have the correct template (NTSC DV 24p (720x480, 23.976 fps). I have the field order correct but tried them all, progressive scan, lower field, upper field, everything. and no matter what, after i render the clip it always turns out being interlace. Now i read that Virtual Dub deinterlaces but when I use Virtual Dub my video comes out stuttering a lot.. on that program i really dont use the settings much other then to deinterlace. So should I use a certain option on virtual dub to get my video playing perfectly, or is there something i can do on vegas to properly deinterlace my footage, or is there anything that i can do to correct this problem.. any advice will be greatly appreciated

If you shot it in 24p (the "p" is for progressive) you don't need to deinterlace. Check and make sure that when you render you are rendering 24p as well.

Not only do you not NEED to deinterlace, you absolutely shouldn't try.

And also remember that if you render as 24p DV with pulldown, and then you watch it on a computer, you'll still see interlace artifacts every couple of frames.

I render using the NTSC DV 24P (2-3 pulldown), and i also used the NTSC DV 24P (2-3-3-2 pulldown), and still getting interlaced footage. The problem is that when I see other people's videos their videos look deinterlcaed and smooth, mine has ridges.

Right. You're rendering a 60i file. It's 24p with pulldown inserted in order to make it conform to 60i. So, you have some fields inserted which make up "frames" which are mixed from different moments in time, hence the interlace artifacts.

When you see people's work online, you're most often watching WMVs or QTs which are inherent progressive and do not have the pulldown, only the native 24p frames.

Render as something else -- like a 23.976 progressive MPEG-2, or as WMV, or an uncompressed AVI (don't change any of the default settings), and you won't see the interlacing.

if you are rendering 24p + pull down you are adding pull down which adds interlace fields ...

all NTSC rendering requires added pull down as the clips have to end up at 29.97

for computer or web viewing you should be able to render without adding pull down .... be sure to check in CUSTOM - VIDEO to make sure frame rate is 23.976 ( no pull down added)

if you render to mpeg for computer/web do NOT add pull down .. go into CUSTOM - Video and select 23.976 for frame rate .. progressive frames..

if mpeg for DVD you render adding pull down and DVD player will remove pull down ( go into menu of DVD player and select the remove) if you have a progressive HDTV many can remove the pull down ( again go into menu on HDTV to select remove pull down)

what are you planning to view 24p on ? web , computer ?

ok a I rendered as a QT6 file and the template i put to 3Mbps video because all those other templates made the video look horrible plus it was still somewhat interlaced, but at 3Mbps it looked nice and not interlaced. So what if I have different places I want to place my project in, that means I have to render the same project different times for however many different places I want to place my final video in. For example if I want to place my video on a DVD then I have to render as MPEG 2, if i want to place my video on the web then i render as a QT file, am i somewhat correct?

Well, yeah. You have to render to the format required by each use. DVD is easy -- it's always MPEG-2 and there are templates for it.

Web is different; there are lots of different choices. Some sites which post video for you have specific requirements, and you need to find out what those are act accordingly.

If it's something you're putting on your own site, generally speaking, a WMV is fine, but you can put up a WMV and a QT and cover 99.9% of people.

"QT6 file and the template i put to 3Mbps video "

after choosing QT - 3Mbps did you click on CUSTOM-VIDEO and change the frame rate from 29.97 (interlace) to 23.976 (progressive)

Thanks David, you really helped me out! Since I see you are very educated in this area I would like you to ask you another question. I just found out that there is no true 16:9 on this DVX100a and that I need to buy some sort of adapter or lens. so my question is do i need to buy an adapter, or do i need to buy an adapter and also a wide angle lens. Im not sure if an adapter contains the lens already thats why Im asking. And once again thanks alot!

Donatello right now im just doing tests but i want to eventually put my vids on myspace for an artist im working with and dvd. so thats mpeg2 for dvd and QT files for the web, and you're saying add a pull down for mpeg2 and dont add a pull down for the web

You can get an adapter for full-resolution 16:9, but the "squeeze" mode is fine. It's only an apparent resolution loss of a tiny bit as compared to the adapter, and as low-resolution as DV is, it's barely noticeable. Not enough to justify the expense and hassle of using the adapter (which is why not many people do it).

A wide-angle lens isn't the same thing as a 16:9 adapter.

For DVD, it's MPEG-2, yes, but you don't REALLY add pulldown; you add pulldown FLAGS for the DVD player to insert pulldown on the fly when it plays to a standard NTSC TV. The MPEG-2 will not be interlaced in and of itself, but it will contain instructions for the DVD player to make it that way.

Use the DVD Architect 24p templates under MPEG-2. Do not, as many seem to want to do, change any of the settings. The template is already optimized.

I dont have to do anything in the pan/crop setting, just edit in a widescreen project and vegas will automatically put it in the right aspect ratio?

If you shoot squeeze, yes. The footage should come over the firewire with metadata telling Vegas that its PAR is widescreen, or 1.21.

That's not the same, by the way, as it would be if you shot with the anamorphic adapter. Then, the DVX would tell Vegas that it recorded 4:3, because that's what it did. You'd have to change the PAR manually if you used that footage.

ok i had to use a NTSC 24p timeline for it to work, because when i used a 24p widescreen it goes to full screen. and this is all is squeeze mode right now

in the properties window (my recent footage being shot in squeeze mode) when i selected 24p widescreen, it would make the footage take up the entire screen with no black bars and the footage remained tall looking, did i do something wrong?

That doesn't sound possible. It would look "tall" if it were taking up the whole window in a 4:3 project. Can you post a screenshot?
