Is the Canon 350D capable of these results?

Ok guys I'm totally getting flamed for asking this because I know I'm asking 'backwards' -it should be "I have this camera and want to get these results" -not "look at this picture, tell me what camera to get" lulz.. anyway...

my question: I'm thinking of getting a Rebel XT 350D with the 18-55mm lens kit (I'm a student and can't afford much more –though I intend to upgrade to a better lens this summer once I get a job)

Will this setup --and considering I'm pretty decent with photoshop and do heavy-duty color correction/glamour retouching-- get me these results?

(particularly the first one which is the best quality IMO)

If not, could you guys recommend a lens upgrade that would allow so --(if at all possible with the 350D body of course).

I should also note: I'm new to still photography but I've been a hobbyist filmmaker for about 6 months now -so I do understand all manual functions of the camera as well as reasonable knowledge in lighting (I have a lowel kit –rifa/omi/pro/tota I can use)

i dont see why not. I would recommend the 50mm 1.8 II its about 70bucks shipped. Also the 85mm or the 17-40mm(pricey). shoot raw on the important pictures that way you can play with them later. a light kit recommend, like a strobist set(2-3flashes, umbrellas, and a wireless transmitter)

i took this shots with my 50mm and 580ex flash(~340)

and used 17-40mm(pricey~ 600)

the 85mm(~340)

The first shot that you are looking at is pretty easy to create. From the looks of it it's just two strobe flashes on the left and right side with the right one being more towards the front and the left one being more towards the back. the lens itself isn't going to matter as much because you are doing a full body. If however you were trying to do a closeup shot the 50mm with distort the features of the head some.

Oh also using hot lights as the one that you have mentioned can be done it's just a little harder. The first shot appears to have been done with a higher shutter speed and because the lights that you have won't get as bright you would either have to use a higher ISO or slower shutter.

Any camera can capture anything.

The question is whether you can manipulate and control light as well as find a subject interesting enough to make photographs work.

The only real differences between a Canon or Nikon entry level camera and highest end model are the controls and ease of access to functions.

It really is that simple.

Now, now...

Certainly the pro models can last for over 200000 shutter releases and are splash/dustproof. How about 8.5 frames per sec for 50 frames at 8+ Mpix?

In other respects it is not tha camera that takes the picture. And they take the same lenses if you need resolving power.

As they say "it's the person behind the camera"

this is correct but, the biggest thing to get right with these kind of shot's is the lighting and the model.
with proper lighting you could get this with a second hand $50 35mm film camera.

disagree... With the proper lighting you can get it from a camera phone

then you don't disagee with me!!!!!!!!!!
i'm saying, it doesn't matter what camera. it matter's about the lighting.

a badly lit shoot with a 120 hasselblad, is a badly lit shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was disagreeing that you need to spend $50... It was a joke

As I said in my first post in this thread... Photography is one art for where it is always the Indian and not the arrows (metaphoric-less translation: the camera doesn't matter)

It's been said a thousand times before...it's not the camera, it's the artist behind the camera.

thanks guys!!

i agree with you all --the camera is merely a paint brush.

It does very little in the hands of a pre-schooler --but give it to Picasso and you get true art.

with that said, I think I've decided on this:

XT 350D body
EF-S 17-85mm lens
and most importantly, I'll look into a good light kit suited for glamour shots :)

thanks again!
looking forward to posting pictures here!

I think that the photographer used a large light source. Either a large chimera, or 4x8 beadboard as a bounce. Most likely it was rather close to the model just out of frame.

What ever they used he/she blocked it off the background.

Probably the large chimera instead of beadboard
