been reading a lot of great posts and samples of this stuff, here's my latest:

12_fps_bodyguard.gif

I've made a clip available on my site here, and have slowed it down for scrutiny.

(In case you missed my earlier :Drogar-Mark-07(DBG) sample, you can watch it there too!)

enjoy!

ewwww!

Very well done.

Although unless your target is a cyborg, or something like that, it doesn't seem right that there are big bright flashes coming from his body, in addition to the blood jets. If he's flesh-and-blood, the only thing his body ought to be spewing, is gorp. If he *is* a cyborg, or something like that, then the flashes coming from his body should be distinct in color and form from your other character's P90 muzzle-flashes.

You might also consider adding a very few bright, small particles intermittently streaking out laterally from the compensator, to simulate particles of incompletely burned propellant, something you generally do see in weapons of this type.

In the top clip, the muzzle flashes aren't tracked on the end of the barrel very well, and the perspective of the flashes are kind of off. In the bottom one where he is shooting downward, the bullet hits don't really match the direction of the muzzle flash. If this is supposed to be an automatic weapon, then the flashes are too long and too far apart, if it's semi auto then they are too long. A flash should only 2 frames for semi, 1 frame for auto. The tracers are out of perspective too.

Good try, just needs some polishing for realism.

Did he die? :-)

Overall the effect works well. Most aren't likely to notice slight tracking errors in the muzzle flash, as there's so much action going on. As someone mentioned the flashes of the bullet impacts didn't make a whole lot of sense.

How'd you get the face of the shooter to light up? Practical effect? Post-production lightening?

LOL! ya, thanks for feedback guys. to answer some questions here and from PM's the muzzle flashes are all done in after effects using three layers-
1) a white solid masked to the muzzle shape
2) an orange duplicate of the one above scaled slightly larger
3) another white solid set to color dodge classic blend with a masks for brightness

Feathering, opacity, and all that jazz was also tweaked for some randomness.

I posted this video in another thread somewhere that kinda breaks it down:
Anatomy of a Shot

I can post a muzzle.ae if anyone's interested. these assets will all be on the dvd for folks like you who may want to play around and do your own version with some of my footage.

Could you post the AE file for the flash? That would be awesome.

LOL. does the spec sheet exist somewhere? that's cool. well, i always wanted this to look like the comic books where they draw the hits to look almost like flashes from a muzzle. guess it's just a style thing...mc

That looks great. Could you explain how you lit up the persons face and surroundings from the muzzle flash?

thanks

hey guys, i'll definitely post a sample AE for y'all after the new years when i'm back at my desktop. as for the reflections I used a feathered mask on a white solid layer that had blending set to classic color dodge. if that didn't make any sense, the AE will explain! :D Happy new year!!!

sorry stevenbills! I suffered what every PC user dreads...catastrophic hard drive failure...good thing I had a backup of all the film data, but I'm back and will do this as soon as I can.

In the meantime, i've posted the entire VFX reel for my film here.

I'm really sorry i let you down with the absence of a tutorial i promised you... will make it up to you!

yo bills,
i uploaded a sample AE file, video, and other assets for you here.
Let me know if you need a walkthru. I wasn't sure if you're familiar with AE...
mc

Thanks Mark. I have been working with AE for about 2 to 3 years now, so I know my way around a little bit.

Thanks for the stuff,

SB
