24p footage all of a sudden interlaced in FCP

I have another posting asking how do i tell if my footage is 24p standard with the correct pulldown. What is the pattern of frames? I had stepped through the footage and every 4th frame was duplicated. I thought there was supposed to be more duplicated frames than just the 4th.

NOW, I step through the same footage (having changed absolutely no settings) the footage is interlaced. There is no duplicated 4th frame. What the hell? I am in a DV NTSC project. Why would that interlace my footage? Shouldn't I be able to step through and count the pulldown frames?

Thanks!

In the Browser, highlight the clip, right click, from the pop-up menu choose Item Properties, Format. The Vid Rate is your frame rate. Ignore the Compressor setting. Field Dominance will be "none" if it's progressive.

As for why your footage would be interlaced, could be you created an interlaced Sequence to drop it in? How did you capture the footage, and from which camera?

Hey,
Thanks for writing.

The frame rate is 29.97. This is normal since I shot 24p Standard.

Field Dom. is Lower even.

The interlacing thing actually has to to with the canvas viewer. At "Fit to window" it looks interlaced, and at "100%" it doesn't...but, at 100% titles look awful. Stange.

I loaded from a regular mini dv camera, a panasonic 3 chip. I don't want to use my 100a for capture. And the sequence is what ever the preset is...DV NTSC 29.97 I believe. But that should be right since I'm working with 24p Standard footage.

Thanks

First, do not ever, never, never, ever judge image quality from the computer screen, period. You're computer screen does not work the same as a TV and will lie to you. You have to view it on an external monitor to see exactly what you have.

Second, you're working with a 60i Sequence, so it is 30fps and interlaced. Your footage is not 24fps nor is it progressive. So you're working correctly, you just can't judge your image quality off of a computer screen, not in any NLE, period.

Your footage is NOT 24, nor progressive, it is 60i, which is 29.97 (what we call 30fps) and interlaced. There's been no pulldown done on anything in your project, from the info you've given. To get 24p footage, you have to shoot 23pA and use the proper capture settings to do the pulldown on capture.

IF you were working with 24p footage, the field dominance would be none, and your Vid Rate would be 23.98 (24fps). I don't see anything wrong with your project from the info you've provided so far.

Thank you again for you response.

I actually found searching online what I was looking for. And maybe I wasn't clear in my original post.

I just wanted to make sure my camera was capturing 24p standard footage when set to 24p and not 30p (meaning camera broken).

The count is 3 whole frames and 2 interlaced frames.

Does anyone agree? Disagree?

Best.

When shooting in 24p standard, not Advanced, it actually gets recorded and captured as 30fps, interlaced. You have to shoot 24pA and capture with the advanced pulldown removal, then you'll have 24p (23.93).

There are stickies on this forum that explain all this very well. I think you're confusing some things. Yes, you actually are capturing 30fps, not 24fps. And NTSC-DV is in fact interlaced. Drop a progressive clip into that Sequence and poof, it's now interlaced.
