ive just gotten a sony hd cam and you can see every line wrinke and makeup problem magnified !does anyone have any thoughts on the tiffen soft fx series or can you reccomend another.
i dont want a dreamy scene look , just something to smooth the skin and make the subject look as atractive as possible!

thanks!

Lee filter's make a fantastic coloured gel called "cosmetic Rogue" that will fit in front of your key light ( you do use light's??? )

i always White balance without it on then add the filter to the light.
very flattering

i don't know of a before and after,
i've had 20 years of trial and error,
the cosmetic rogue is like a difussion, with a mild pink tone.
i was fisrt introduced to it by a Theatre lighting designer.
you can buy it by the metre from theatre lighting supplies

thanks ian,
is there a gel you can reccomend for a brownish tanning effect to the skin rather the a golden or pinkening tone?

Why would you choose a format with high detail to then blur that detail?
HD requires more skill at makeup application than SD. With HD you can see that pancake is pancake and not the persons real skin tone. Now you have to airbrush make up or use really skilled makeup artists who has worked in film.

Yeah. I NEVER use filters in front of my lens. In fact, I don't even have protective UV filters on any of my video or still lenses! It's not quite the same effect, but I MUCH prefer to do that "ProMisty" kinda stuff in post. I just HATE losing resolution! Magic Bullet's entry-level Look Suite plug-in product (about $100), I think is GREAT for making these kinds of effects. I used the "White Diffusion Max" in the opening shot of RUNWAY (link below). The opening shot was shot within seconds (she simply turned around, and then walked away from camera) of the last shot on which I applied NO plug-in. P.S. The last shot is AFTER the end credits.

LEE has a gel that does just that (they make several different-colored cosmetic gels). I've used the tanned-skin one a few times, but I forget what it's called.

Oh, duh . . . I just read your initial post more carefully . . . What you want to do is to employ the "skin detail" function of your camera (not sure your camera has one, but all higher-end Sony cameras do). If you have one, it'll be buried deep in your menus somewhere. It selectively reduces detail (sharpness) on only the skin-colored parts of your picture. Its purpose is to address exactly what you were asking about.

thanks guys! if either of you get a chance please list the name of the filter that gives the skin a brown tan i dont think lee's site list one that actually gives that description!
thanks!

Brown tan, is probably:

LEE 184 cosmetic Peach, or 185 cosmetic Burgundy
188 cosmentic Highlight is a bit too slamon,
they all will difuse the light, so you are going to lose about a stop

You could use a gel color called chocolate. But I wouldn't...I just use warm cards... to trick the color balance, or do it in post...If you were shooting film, perhaps an 812 filter or "Enhancing filter".
To answer your original question, I too prefer to add MOST filter effects in post, but I have used a #1 promist or a warm promist on occasion.
