M (erciless) Night Shyamalan

Seriously, I am not joking, right now I cannot think of a worse film than Lady in the Water. I've seen the crappest films that man has to offer and this out-turds them all. I'm not being unduly mean or unfair, I really mean this. The film is so BLAND and RETARTED (yes, I know I misspelled "retarded") that there should only be a very very tiny demographic who like this film. Why isn't mankind protesting that Night should never be allowed to make another film? Why aren't laws being passed to prevent him from directing / writing ever again? I thought Signs and the Village were excruciatingly horrid but lord have mercy I had no idea the true meaning of gastrointestinal pain until now. Is Night the anti-christ?

God bless Night for being in the position of being able to make films, doing what he loves, but seriously, he must have a 1000 lifetimes of good karma to get away with making so much crap in this life without anyone really seeming to notice. My retarded cat could make a better film than Lady in the Water.

I like Paul Giamatti. I felt sorry for him that he had to be in this film! I like Howard. She has a great face and in the right film she could be terrific but because of her being in two Night stinkers now (The Village and Lady in the Toilet), whenever I see her face I fear I will always see Night's mug superimposed over hers. I don't think I'll ever recover.

P.S. I liked The Sixth Sense. Yay!

I get ur Jist

lol i love its cliches and no story an stereotyping also the way it cops out at the end I love it. my pick for worst film of 2006.

I finally saw The Village last night. Wow, that was a steaming pile. Some of the worst direction I've ever seen. Solid actors like Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt were reduced to amateur status under his watch. It was basically an hour and a half of awkward silence and poorly delivered lines. I'll have to watch more of his stuff, because we had so much fun turning it into MST3K: The Home Game.

Man... harsh. I still he think he's one of the more talented writer/director's of our day folks. Not sure why everyone wants to bag on LITW so much. It wasn't his best work, but was still a very entertaining film. I thought the characters were great and the story was interesting. I mean, for once the man decides to opt out of the twisting ending everyone dogs him for, and he STILL gets dogged! I don't know man, maybe I just dig the intimate personal quality of his stories.

no its not the twist thing i sdidnt like he portriat ever character as 2d figures except himself. I was waitng for the chinese family to say mi swo swowwii or the mexican family to come out and 30 people living in one apartment when the party happen them beating a pinata and eating oranges I mean it was that bad. I think he doesnt know what he's writing for anymore. himself, for art, for fun or just to say hey i made another "interesting film"... hes been a down hill slide since unbreakable to me.

He sucks. and I cant wait to see his next bomb. Also can he get the F out of the water theme in his movies. they are like weaknesses in all his movies except 1 or 2. I mean come on.

I really enjoyed Signs, but haven't yet seen Lady.

M. Night takes risks, and that's commendable. But sometimes they backfire.

And casting himself in speaking roles sometimes comes at the expense of story. (Much as I liked Signs, for example, I didn't really buy him as the town vet. But I overlooked that conceit.)

Then why did you do it? :undecided

In the recent M. NIght book there's a little sub-story about how he sent the script to Paul Giamatti, assuming he'd jump at the chance to be in his movie but months and months went by with no response. M. Night was so confused because, gasp, who wouldn't want to do a movie with M. Night??

Well a ridiculous amount of months later Giamatti called Night out of nowhere and said he would do the movie. M. Night asked him what took him so long. Paul sheepishly replied that he just never got to the script.

Still, the psychological damage this left on Night was enormous. He just couldn't wrap his brain around the fact that Giamatti was sent an M. Night script and didn't pick it up for five months. Haha.

But why would you knowingly misspell a word because of it?

LOL. I misspelled "retarded" to convey that (jokingly) perhaps Night is "retarted". I was imagining him on the floor with a big pad of paper and a huge crayola scribbling away at his script for Lady in the Water and him (being retarted and an egomaniac) not having a clue that the script was silly beyond silly. The second the movie started with the stupid stickmen drawings and that lame storey about the narfs blah blah ... you knew this film was going to be Retarted with a capital "R".

I love films that take risks and explore new territory. Night isn't doing that.

Anyway, normally I wouldn't pick on a filmmaker so much but his big head and his cameos that are now turing into main characters (his next film will probably have him in the lead!) ... and the fact that people praise him so much and I DON'T GET THIS AT ALL ... makes me somewhat irritable LOL.

lol thats so true.

My bet: The Sixth Sense, which was written and rewritten a gazillion times over a few years, benefitted tremendously by some very smart and uncredited writers or other creative types giving Shyamalan notes. That's how it works when someone else is forking out millions of dollars, especially for a "new" director (at the time). And while development poorly handled can result in a big mess where the artist's original vision is lost, development handled well can result in a script that is smarter, more focused, more original than if the artist just went ahead all on his lonesome. Cut to Planet Earth after the mega-success of Sixth Sense, and no one could (or was willing to) force Shyamalan to rewrite or take notes anymore. It's the Nirvana so many filmmakers dream of: making their art without the "meddling" of a studio. Problem is, Shyamalan probably let it go to his head, believing that he was solely responsible for the brilliance of Sixth Sense. Either that film was a cosmic accident, or other people gave him some really good ideas. Most filmmakers do well to listen to a few trusted, smart, creative advisors. We usually can't see our own art for the dreck it can be. I thought Lady in the Water was like a really really great first draft script. It just needed a big rewrite or three from a Josh Friedman or Richard Lagravanese. Instead we got a student film with a big budget. After reading the book on Shyamalan (the Man Who Heard Voices), I realized he's a real artist who wants desperately to manifest his dreams on celluloid. I felt for him. I admire him for trying. The pain will be our gain, though, because he just might start listening to a few people now, and I bet he delivers something really really good again.

I am not a big M Night fan, I hated "The Village," Adrian Brody was a disater in it.

I watched Lady last night, and I would give it a mild thumbs up. It was an ill conceived story that required way to much exposition, BUT I could watch Giamatti eat a ham sandwich and find it interesting and M. Knight did a good job of building tension in the third act. And Christopher Doyle is both a freak and a genious.
