Drive Unmounted! All my work is on it! Help please

Every once in a while my Maxtor Sata Raid 500 will unmount while I'm using FCP. I'm on a heavy duty MAC but sometimes I push it too far. I save my work every few minutes and if the mount unmounts (which rarely happens, but it happens), I simply reboot and it remounts. BUT, this time its gone and won't come back. I opened DISK UTILITY, the disk appears in there but its "offline" and "Not Mounted." The error reads

Verifying volume "Maxtor Sata Raid 500"
Can't open /dev/rdisk2: Resource Busy
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 non HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

Sounds like a bad disk drive. Did you try to repair it with Disk Utility? Did you try Disk Warrior? If both of those fail, the drive is dead...

I lost everything, FCP, MOtion, ProAnimator, Compressor and tons more, its all gone. All my FCP work. This is where I stick a gun in my mouth. I bought this pc used off a guy. So there's 10K worth of software I need to by now. GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE MAC! NOT!

Don't panic until you have had Disk Utility and Disk Warrior try to save it. There are also data recovery utilities out there that work to varying degrees.

Ok, all your apps were on a RAID drive and not on the System drive? I'm just a tad confused.

Long time ago, when I lost my system drive out of the blue, with tons of business documentation, photo libraries, emails, etc, all gone with no back up, I learned, spend the money on back ups, and back up everything...

I feel for ya, I had to stick a gun in my own mouth a couple of weeks ago, camera related, though...

Final Cut was on Macintosh HD system drive. My work was on a RAID drive that became unmounted. I resinstalled OS X and checked to have the previous drive stored in a previous drive folder. After the install FCP is in my applications folder but nothing happens when I click on it. I guess its just the start up icon but not linking to the program? Also the two RAID drives I have in my computer are no longer showing on the desktop. Thanks for your help.

You should REALLY REALLY REALLY check out DiskWarrior before you FU your system totally. BenB is spot on!

I guess depending on how your RAID is setup, you can insert a good drive and the system will rebuild your data for you as part of RAID, unless your RAID0.

Thanks for your help everyone. The guy that sold me the computer is coming over to help. He is going to slave one of the drives and set super duper to back up on it every day. I'll use disk warrior to get the stuff off the drive that unmounted. Thanks again. What a mess!

I guess the lesson is to back up everything, NOW. RAID is fine, and very reliable, but not 100%. I've seen many RAID re-builds fail in my previous career. Not the majority, only a small number, but, some fail none the less.

Noting beats good old fashioned tape backup units.
