Red circle with X when trying to record

Hello all,

I've looked in the my manual (and will continue to do so), but I have a quick question. Last night when recording a short scene a red circle with an x in the center would pop up, not allowing me to record. I'm not sure what the problem was. Turning off the DVX100a solved the problem, but it occured 4 times within a few hours. The scene file was correct, the tape seemed fine, ample power... Any clues?

My camcorder has been in a pelican case for a few months. I've never seen that symbol before, even the last time I used it Sept 2006. Is it possible the heads could become dirty while in a safe storage? I am using Panasonic Mini DV Master ay-dvm63mq tapes, so I'm sure thats not the problem.
